Langley's First Drop Game to Crows By Dennis Eden Feb 1 2007 The Langley Rugby Club first division team had their unbeaten streak broken on Saturday at the hand of the Kelowna Crows. The loss was the first since November 2005. Langley fielding a mixed first and second team had 9 starters missing from the lineup. Despite the missing players, there was no excuse for the teams terrible on field performance, and Kelowna was full credit for their 10 to 6 victory. Saturday’s game was the first game of the BC Men’s First Division League. Langley won the first half schedule with an unblemished record and a spot in April 's BC playoffs. The winner of the second half schedule will take the top seed and home field advantage through out the playoffs, with the finals to be played at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium on May 5th. The Game The day was perfect but the field was greasy and both teams suffered from the slick surface. Langley took the start and pushed to inside the Crows 22 but was stopped from reaching their goal. On one push towards goal, Langley lost the ball and Kelowna kicked the ball deep. Missed tackles and some fast Crows players beat Langley to their own goal scoring the first points for a 5 to nil lead. Kelowna again scored in the 15th minute after controlling the ball and managed to score from a penalty 5 metres out, the score now 10 to nil. Langley started to pick up their game but was stifled from ball handling errors and penalties against losing field possession in the red Zone. Langley standoff Gary Ewasiuk had one attempt at goal for 3 points after Kelowna conceded a penalty 22 metres out. The score was 10 to 3 at the half. Langley played a much better game in the second half but the ability to finish off plays was not evident. Langley’s usual fast breaking backs did not have their legs and the Crows shut down the usually potent group. Ewasiuk converted his second penalty kick 3 minutes into the second half to cut the lead to 4 points, but they were unable to get over the goal line. Most of Langley’s missing players should be back for next week’s game in Vancouver but some key players will be missing due to suspensions and injuries. Good news, Wayne Bremner, one of Langley’s best players in the clubs history has returned after a stint in the BC CSI Premier League with Bayside. Wayne is a welcome addition to Langley’s already strong backs line and will help the team quest towards winning their second provincial title. The game was shortened as both sides had to play many players in both games. In this match, Langley dominated most facets of the game. Kelwona scored first with the convert for a 7 to nil lead but after that, Langley took over with tries from James Morrison, on a great play set up by his brother Stu, and two tries from Taylor Connal. Andrew Vaydo converted 2 of 3 tries for a Langley 19 to 7 victory. Thank you to both referee Bryan Arciero and Patrick Allard. The club will be on the road the next three weeks. Next Saturday will be one of the toughest games of their schedule going to historic Brockton Oval to play the Vancouver Rowing Club. Come and support your team.
DIV ONE CHAMPIONSHIP REPLAY: Langley 17 - Brit_lions 13 By Dennis Eden posted Oct 5 2006 The Langley Rugby Club hosted the Brit-Lions club on Saturday Sept 30 at Milner Park, a replay of the BCRU Division 1 Final, a historic Championship win by Langley. The Brit-Lions had split their first two games of the season while Langley had only played one match defeating United Club 32-27. Some observers felt the Brit-Lions would have the upper hand as their fitness levels were superior to Langley’s players and their roster is virtually unchanged from last year’s side. On the other hand Langley has had to make several changes due to retirements and players moving out of town. The Brit-Lions scored first with a penalty in the 8th minute and continue to apply pressure and were rewarded with another penalty after 5 minutes that went wide. Langley had two penalty kicks in the middle of the half with both attempts going wide. It was not until the 32nd minute when prop Robbie Hayes bullied his way into goal after a series of attacks and recycles near the Brits goal. Ewasiuk converted to take the lead 7-3. The Brit-Lions ended the half with another penalty kick to cut the lead to 1 point, 7-6 The second half was a chirpy affair with one player from each team being yellow carded and sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes and one Brit-Lions player being red carded for a high and late hit. Langley played better rugby and had greater scoring attempts but could not put points on the board. In the 14th minute, Hayes kicked a loose ball downfield and the chase was on. Centre Stu Morrison was passing the Brits defender and going to pounce on the loose ball for the try when he was grabbed and put to the turf. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try under the posts and the conversion was taken by Brendon Kiloh to put Langley up 14-6. It was not long after that Langley was awarded another penalty which was successfully converted by Kiloh to take the score 17-6. The Brit-Lions came to life in the final 10 minutes and they were rewarded with a converted try to shave the lead to 4 points. Langley regrouped and their defense held good to the final whistle for a well deserved victory 17-13 Kolby Brezden and Robbie Hayes were outstanding for Langley. The youthful Div 2 side had their work cut out for them and quickly found themselves down 17-0 by the half. The Brit-Lions forwards were too big and overpowered the Langley side controlling much of the ball possession in Langley's half. Langley picked up their game in the second half and Brits could only score one try in the 5th minute. Langley take top spot in Div 1, Cowichan take Div 2, Langley hosts United and Kamloops in playoff action this weekend By Dennis Eden posted April 13 2006 The ICC was spot on with the schedule in Div 1 and 2 as we had to wait to the last game of the season for Langley to be crowned Spring League Champion in Div1 and Cowichan in Div 2. In a must win game on Saturday, Langley’s Div 2 team needed a victory to secure a first place into the playoffs. Visiting Cowichan from Duncan on Vancouver Island also needed the win to get the first place seeding. The game was everything expected, except the final outcome for Langley. It seemed whichever team controlled the ball was able to score. Both teams had put up a tough defensive wall and little yardage was gained but both sides were able to retain possession and gradually moved the ball towards their opponent’s goal. Both of Langley’s tries were spectacular long runs on the wing after lots of forward play and rucking. The first try in the 6th minute was a 40-metre sprint by winger Ryan Yeomans. Ryan finally received a pass springing loose with an overlap to the corner flag the convert short for the early 5 to nil lead. Cowichan took the ball on the restart and 10 minutes later tied the game then took the lead with the convert. Langley winger Sean Hogan was sprung loose for a 40-metre romp after taking a set scrum at center field. Jamie Dobson was good on the convert to retake the lead 12 to 7. The final 20 minutes had both teams battling it out between the 22 metre lines with no further scoring in the half. In the second half, Cowichan converted a penalty kick for 3 points in the 5th minute, then a converted try in the 22nd minute to take a 5-point lead. Langley started to gain momentum in the 29th minute and was moving the ball wide to their backs when a Cowichan center intercepted a pass and went 40 metres for the try all but putting the game away for the visitors. The final 19 minutes continued to be a defensive battle and Cowichan took the game 24 to 12 and first place at the final whistle. The loss was the first for Langley this year and gave the team a No.3 seed in the upcoming Div 2 provincial playoffs. Well done Cowichan, Spring League Div 2 Champion. Langley romp to a record win against Surrey Beavers 1st Divison 80 – 8, 2nd Division 34 – 0 By Dennis Eden posted April 3 2006 Under wet conditions and a brisk wind blowing across the pitch, the Langley Rugby Club dominated the Surrey Beavers AA in both games at Crush Crescent field on Saturday. It was another impressive performance from Langley against a team who failed to control the ball in greasy conditions. Langley was too skilled, too well organized, too fast and too strong for their opponents. Surrey was fielding a very young side who could not keep up with the pace and experience of Langley. It was men against boys and at times it looked like unopposed practice. In the Div 1 match, there was little doubt in the outcome of this game, with Langley scoring almost at ease with 46 first half points, an insurmountable lead. Surrey managed a first half penalty kick and a try in the second half for 8 points. Langley winger Mauro Gola led the way with 3 first half tries, with individual tries from center Colby Brezden, prop Dustin Dickson, flanker Rich Pearce, lock Brian Anderson and fullback Stu Morrison. Standoff Gary Ewasiuk converted 3 tries to round off the scoring. The second half, Langley continued to dominate and again led by Gola who went in for 2 more tries, followed by Anderson for his second, prop Sean Tucker, centre Andy Maher and Morrison for his second. Ewasiuk converted 2 tries for a total of 80 points to 8. The Div 2 side struggled with a stubborn Surrey defense but managed to take control in the 29th minute with a try by fullback Jamie Dobson. From the restart, winger Sean Hogan broke two tackles and rambled 40 metres for the try. Jamie Dobson struggled against the wind and poor footing, bouncing two convert attempts off the posts. In the 40th minute, center Frank Walsh sprinted 30 metres, with Dobson’s convert good to take a half time lead of 17 to nil. Winger Ryan Yeomans opened the second half with a 50 metres sprint for a try under the posts. Jamie Dobson scored his second try from a driving maul, and James Morrison completed the days scoring with one convert from Dobson for a 34 to 0 victory. Surrey was unable to convert possession into points despite several forays into Langley’s 22 metres area in the first half. The wins have consolidated Langley’s position to the top of the table in both divisions. The 3rd division team hosted the Chilliwack Crusaders. Taking an early lead on a try by Langley’s Daryl Hart, Chilliwack responded with a converted try to take a close 7 to 5 half time lead. The second half, Chilliwack expanded their lead to 19 to 5 with two tries, one convert. Langley came back for their second try by Gary Dawe, but Chilliwack took the wind out of the lad’s sails of a comeback with a final try for a 24 to 10 victory. Thank you to the players for three entertaining games. Thank you to Surrey Beavers and Chilliwack Crusaders for the trip to Crush Crescent. To Mike Berg and the senior’s players, your leadership and commitment at training and during the games goes beyond the line of duty. The executive is proud of you. Thank you to the loyal supporters and sponsors. Next Saturday April 8th Langley will be hosting the Cowichan Rugby Club from Vancouver Island in Div 1 and 2 and Capilano Rugby Club in Div3. Please come and support tour team, THE BEST IS YET TO COME. 2006 ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET ON APRIL 29TH AT MUSTANGS BAR & GRILL IN ALDERGROVE.

LANGLEY SWEEPS SEATTLE - 19-17 victory in 1st division action By Dennis Eden posted March 28 2006 A pair of tries by Sean Tucker helped propel Langley Rugby Club to a hard fought victory in their game against Seattle. Arriving 2 hours late in Seattle due to a bus breakdown, the Langley Rugby Club won both of their matches against the Seattle Rugby Club. With daylight being becoming an issue, the 1st division game was played first. The match was a battle with Seattle controlling most of the game. Seattle kept the ball in their forwards and attempted to dominate the game, however the local lads were up for the task, playing the most physical game of the year. Every Seattle ball carrier was hit hard by at least two Langley defenders, limiting yardage. Seattle scored 2 penalty kicks and 2-drop goals before Langley took over as Seattle started to tire; Langley took advantage scoring three tries. Hooker Sean Tucker scored two tries from short penalty taps. Second row Jon Bright scored Langley’s other major with two converts from standoff Gary Ewasiuk for 19 points. Seattle did have an opportunity to tie the game on the convert attempt on their lone try, but the convert missed by inches with a brisk wind at the kickers back. In the final minute, Seattle was awarded a penalty 35 metres from Langley’s goal but elected to run the ball rather than go for the 3-point penalty kick that would put Seattle ahead by 1 point. Seattle knocked on the ball into Langley hands, kicking the ball to touch ending the game and securing the close victory. Langley’s coach Mike Berg commented, “This was a total team effort. Missing several starters from both teams, some players had to play double duty and played the most physical game of the year.” Team Div1 - 1.Burns Jamie 2.Tucker Shaun 3.Hayes Robbie 4.Rockson Travis 5.Bright Jonathan 6.Crowley Taylor 7.MacKay Dave 8.Dickson Dustin 9.Thompson Shaun 10.Ewasiuk Gary 11.Radon Michal 12.Brezdon Colby 13.Morrison Stu 14.Hutfelter Chase 15.Morrison James Langley's 2nds played a shortened match but controlled the game and scorched Seattle 49 – 5. Langley win two against Brit Lions, 22-10 in 2nd division and 26-10 in 1st division BY DENNIS EDEN posted March 20 2006 The Langley Rugby Club resumed league play Saturday after a two week layoff. Despite a bit of rust from the break, both senior men’s teams continued to dominate their opponents. 2nd Division Playing at John Oliver Park in Delta, the host Brit Lions club sits in the middle of league standings in both divisions. The second division sides taking the field first dominated most of the early plays but were unable to turn the field advantage into points. Langley fullback Jamie Dobson had an early attempt at goal from a penalty but pushed the ball wide of the posts with a brisk breeze blowing across the field. It was not until the 29th minute after sustained pressure inside the Brit-Lions 22 metre area, a penalty was awarded. Scrum Half Steve Fauth elected to tap the penalty and Travis Rockson on second phase found a gap in the tenacious defense for the first major. The feat was repeated with 3 minutes remaining when Dwayne Peters went in for the try from a maul down the sidelines. Both converts were missed from an extreme angle and the score was 10 to nil. The Brit-Lions not to be undone took the ball from the restart and continued to move the ball towards Langley’s goal. After several forward crashes, the home team managed to score the try cutting Langley’s lead in half at the interval. The second half. Langley again dominated and scored two more trys, one by Jamie Dobson off a 5 metre scrum, and the final by Chase Hutfelter who intercepted a Brit-Lions pass and went 40 metres with an opponent hanging off his back for the major. Dobson converted the try for 22 points total. The Brit Lions scored their second try for 10 points on the day. At press time, the team was tied for first place with Cowichan RFC from Duncan, both with undefeated records. Langley plays Cowichan at Crush Crescent on April 8th. 1.McRobert Mike 2.Peters Duane 3.Berg Mike 4.Jackson Tom 5.Thurston Chris 6.Madu Brad 7.Coleman Nathan 8.Rockson Travis 9.Fauth Steve 10.James Morrison .11.Yeomans Ryan 12.HutfelterChase 13.Walsh Frank 14.Hogan Sean 15.Dobson Jamie 16.Guzzo Al 17.Ahrens Mike 18.Parson Joe 19.Campbell Alex. Referee Gary Dawe First Division The only undefeated first division team, Langley took the pitch missing several starters and having to use three-second division players playing double duty. Despite this, Langley showed they are the class of the Lower Mainland. The biggest difference in this game was discipline, or lack of it. The Brit Lions were penalized 7 times inside of their 30-metre area resulting in 21 points from Gary Ewasiuk to win the game. The lone try came from Kevin Homalka in the 28th minute of the first half. The Brit Lions managed a try and two penalty kicks for 11 points. The game was not indicative of Langley’s play. The fields at John Oliver Park are engineered for rugby and should have provided Langley’s backs with plenty of room to spin the ball. Full credit to the Brit-Lions team speed, they were able to corral our backs and wingers, resulting in a slower paced match with lots of forward moves. Langley’s forward pack played a great game again. Front row did a great job in the sets and loose play with hooker Sean Tucker leading the way. The back row punished their opponents with hard runs and tackles by Brian Anderson and Jon Bright. Chase Hutfleter, Jamie Dobson both played two full games and never missed a step. The 26 – 10 victory leaves Langley undefeated and in sole possession of first place. Next week, both teams travel to Seattle before coming home to close out the season with two home matches against Surrey on April 1, then Cowichan RFC on April 8th. Langley’s third division team won their game by default from the Brit-Lions. Next Week, they play the Scribes club in Vancouver. 1.Dickson Dustin 2.Tucker Shaun 3.Hayes Robbie 4.Bright Jonathan 5.Anderson Brian 6.Pearce Richard 7.MacKay Dave 8.Crowley Taylor 9.Hutfelter Chase 10.Ewasiuk Gary11.Gola Mauro12.Brezdon Colby13.Morrison Stu 14.Hamolka Kevin 15.DobsonJamie Referee Martin Loewen Thank you to all the players for two solid performances, you played with phenomenal spirit. Langley's winning streak continues against Kelowna, maintains top place in 1st and 2nd divisions By Dennis Eden posted Feb 27 2006 Both Langley men’s rugby teams continue to dominate the BC First Division League with victories over the Kelowna Crows Saturday at Crush Crescent field. The games originally scheduled for Kelowna were moved to Langley due to inclement weather which proved to be good luck for Langley. Both teams struggled with scoring, having to work hard for their points to secure victories. 2nd Division In the second division game, a last minute try by back James Morrison broke a 22 all tie to clinch the victory before full time was blown. Langley got off to a quick start in the 4th minute with a try by hooker Ryan Brown, the convert attempt going wide. Kelowna replied 4 minutes later taking the ball from the restart and driving to the Langley goal. Kelowna’s large forward pack drove the ball into Langley’s goal for the tying try and took the lead with a convert. Kelowna scored again off a miss handled ball near Langley’s goal to go up 12 to 5. In the 31st minute, Sean Tucker who was playing in the back line, usually the first division hook for Langley, bulled his way over for a try to come within 2 points. Kelowna converted a penalty kick attempt in the last minute of the half to increase their lead to 15 to 10. The second half was a close affair with Jason Warnock scoring a try in the 5th minute, with the convert good by Steve Fauth to regain the lead at 17 – 15. Sean Tucker scored his second try of the day two minutes later to stretch the lead to 22 – 15. The next 20 minutes both sides were unable to move the ball into scoring position until Kelowna strung together a series of plays and kept possession before scoring the tying try and convert. Langley regained the ball and started to pressure Kelowna inside their own half. A penalty was awarded 15 metres to the side of the post and the penalty kick sliced wide, that would have given Langley the go ahead score. As the clock ticked down, James Morrison broke two tackles 10 metres in front of the posts and went in for the major. With the convert by Fauth, Langley took the lead 29 – 22 with only seconds remaining in the game. The victory gives the second division team a perfect second half record of 5 – 0 and first place. 1st Division The firsts played the second game of the day and found the Kelowna side was just as stubborn as their second division counterparts. The first 30 minutes of the game, neither team was in position to score any points until Langley got two chances from penalties in the 30th and 39th minute, Mauro Gola who had the kicking duties was good on the second attempt for a 3 to nil lead at the half. Langley struck fast in the second half with Stu Morrison going into the corner for the try, with close support from Brian Anderson and Gary Ewasiuk. Langley continued to pressure but Kelowna played great defense, shutting down Langley’s potent back line. The final two scores were both a results of Kelowna penalties defending their goal line. Mauro Gola was good on both of the attempts in the 6th and 11th minute to cap off the days scoring for a 14 to nil shut out. The victory gives Langley sole possession of first place in the men’s first division league, with a two game lead over second placed Kelowna. The third division team had a bye, and there will be no games for the next two weeks. All three teams will play on March 18 going to the Brit Lions in Delta then to Seattle on the 25th. Langley's first division team continued their unbeaten streak by dominating the Brit-Lions of South Delta 28 - 6 on Saturday to improve their record to 7-0-0 by Dennis Eden Oct 24 2005 Langley's first division team continued their unbeaten streak by dominating the Brit-Lions of South Delta 28 - 6 on Saturday to improve their record to 7-0-0. With the addition of Sean Tucker from Queensland Australia, playing in the hook position, the side was able to move hooker Rich Pearce to flanker to replace perennial standout Taylor Crowley who is unavailable to the club. Gary Ewasiuk was on his kicking game converting 5 of 7 attempts for 13 points and helped the team to a dominating 23 to 6 first half lead. Pearce and inside centre Colby Brezden scored a try each. The Brit Lions only points came from two penalty attempts in the middle 10 minutes of the first half. They were unable to come close to Langley's goal until the final 10 minutes of the match where they had two sure tries thwarted with hard hitting on the goal line that resulted in a knock on and penalty for off side. The only second half points came from winger Mauro Gola, t
