The 3rd Annual Velox Touch Tournament will be held on Saturday 14th of July
at the Velox Rugby ground

by Aaron Frisby
posted May 12 2007

This years tournament will be bigger and better than ever, with more teams,
more prizes, beer gardens and entertainment throughout the day and night.

With teams already confirmed from Portland, San Diego and Vancouver the
tourney is already shaping to be a great success.

To keep the pros from dominating the fun-goes on the field, there will be
two divisions to enter this year. Competitve, for those who want to take
things seriously and Social, for players who want a bit of a run around and
enjoy a couple of quiets (or louds) in the beer garden.

The squads will be restricted to 12 players per team and the cost will be
$10 per player, just like last year. This will cover entry fee and a lunch
of some sort.

So be sure to circle July 14th on your calendar and start scouting some team
mates.

Portland team win Victoria Touch Rugby tournament - Video highlights of the tournament

[ed. comments below]
posted June 27 2006

The team from Portland, Oregon taught a lesson to other participants of the tournament in the skills of touch rugby. The Portland team which won the USA club championship last year and has several players on the USA national touch rugby team were too skilled for the hastily assembled competition. The other teams were typically club rugby players trying to pick up the nuances of touch rugby. Touch rugby is not the same as silly buggers, a fact made clear after watching the American team in action.

The key to Touch Rugby is managing and attacking the 5 metre zone that occurs after every touch. It's a great way to keep fit for the rugby season and reinforces some basic rugby skills such as passing and support play. Hopefully we'll see a proliferation of touch rugby tournaments in the summer...and next year beat the yanks.

Touch Rugby rules

The attacking team must start with a tap from the middle of the field.

The defending team must be back 10 meters for the start of play, and 5m
after each touchdown.

After a team scores the play begins again with a tap in the middle.

The person who takes the role of dummy (scrum) half can cross the try-line
but can not score.

If the dummy half is touched while in possession of the ball it is a
turnover.

ROLL BALL:

After being touched, the player touched must roll the ball BACK between
their legs.

The attacking team continues play until they have BEEN touched 6 times.

After being touched 6 times the ball is handed over to the other team.

After touching the attacking player (with the ball), all defending team
members must retreat 5m.

Ball to Ground: When the ball is dropped on the ground it is a turnover.

Turnover: When the attacking side loses the ball to the opposition.

No control: When the ball is thrown, dropped, knocked on, in a touch.

When someone is penalized their team must then retreat 10m.

PENALTY:

Ball on the ground - let go of the ball - touch the ball with your foot -
pick up the ball. If the defending players do not retreat they are offside.

If a touch is considered to be too strong.

KEEP YOUR ARMS DOWN ~ NO SWINGING ARMS !

Offside: When the defending players have not retreated 5m.

Forward Pass: When the ball is passed in front of the player who is in
possession of the ball.

Touch and Pass: When the person who is touched then passes the ball.

Voluntary Rolled Ball or No Touch: When the player is not touched and rolls
the ball between their legs.

More than a Meter: The ball must not be rolled more than one meter.

Shepherd or Obstruction: Obstructing a touch from the defending side.

Deviation: When a defender changes their direction before retreating
straight back 5m.

For minor offenses i.e. bickering with refs, shouldering, leg trips
etc...the player will be sin binned for three minutes without replacement.

Foul play of any nature (the referee being the sole judge) will result in
the offending player being sent from the field without replacement.
