After nearly two decades away, Richmond is back in the B.C. women's rugby union-and in a big way

posted Oct 6 2005
from the Richmond Review

After nearly two decades away, Richmond is back in the B.C. women's rugby union-and in a big way.

Last year's Lower Mainland under-19 girls champions are 2-0 in their inaugural season in the Second Division after an 10-0 victory over visiting University of B.C. last weekend.

"They're doing great," says coach Aaron Dubois. "Although they're a young team it's certainly pleasing to us the way they've stepped up. Their spirit of rugby is just so prevalent."

A familiar cast of characters is leading the way for Richmond. Captain Jennifer Caldwell is again demonstrating her leadership skills on and off the field. The utility forward capped the scoring last Sunday with a late unconverted try.

Co-captain Melanie Emlyn is currently sidelined by a torn hamstring but is expected to be back in the lineup in a couple of weeks.

Both players made the B.C. under-19 team last year and Emlyn's presence on the field is missed, said Dubois, who shares the coaching duties this season with Jon Fitzpatrick, who is also the club president.

It took Richmond a while to get going against UBC, which Dubois blamed on a lack of preparation that took nearly a half to work through. But after defending for a majority of the opening period, Richmond snuck in an unconverted try by outside centre Cassie Hesse (her fourth try in two games) to go up 5-0 at the break.

With the wind at their backs and game jitters gone, Richmond put on a good display of technical rugby in the second half that was met with solid defence by UBC.

Carolynn Paxton and Jenny Loades shared player-of-the-game honours among the forwards, while inside centre Michelle Pearce was tops among the backs.

Richmond has a bye this Sunday, resuming play Oct. 16 at 11:30 a.m. at Sea Island against Abbotsford.

The women's side is always looking for new players, aged 14 and up. Contact the women's program at rrfcwomensrugby@yahoo.com for more information.
