BC Rugby Coaching Clinic & Professional Development Course: LOMU CANCELS TRIP TO BC

BCRU Press Release
posted Dec 21 2007

BC Rugby regretfully announces that Jonah Lomu has cancelled his trip to British Columbia due to schedule “changes to a camp he is attending” in his attempt to make a comeback in professional rugby.

However, BC Rugby would like to stress that the coach clinic set for January 19th and 20th will still take place and that a suitable replacement for Lomu is currently being recruited.

The following message was received from Jonah’s agent regarding the cancellation of his trip:

“It is with deep regret that I have to advise that Jonah is unable to attend the coaching clinic. His professional playing role is still his first priority and we have been advised today that there have been some date changes to the camp he is attending. This now runs from the 15th through to the 20th, it was originally planned to begin on the 22nd and there is no way to excuse Jonah from it. It [the cancellation] sits very uncomfortably with us both… I fully understand the inconvenience this causes and sincerely apologize.”

Attempts to move the agenda forward one week (still prior to the start of the 2008 spring season) were not successful.

“This trip has been months in the making and the agenda for Jonah’s visit was set. We signed a contract with JL11 Ltd and submitted appearance fee funds,” says Jeff Sauvé, BC Rugby chief executive officer. “Obviously we are very disappointed this initiative did not come to fruition. However, we respect that Jonah is committing himself to reviving his professional rugby career and wish him all the best in his pursuit.”

The 2008 BC Rugby Coaching Clinic & Professional Development Course will be held at St. George’s School in Vancouver on Saturday, January 19th and Sunday, January 20th, 2008.

“We will find a replacement to serve as the conference lead,” added Sauvé. “Our first priority is to retain an individual of world-class rugby pedigree who will provide unique insight for our coaches. We have contacted individuals whose names would be unfamiliar to our coaches.”

Crawford will serve as the lead clinician for the Saturday Coaching Clinic, where he will focus on Continuity and Decision Making in the Modern Game. With on-field and off-field sessions, Crawford will address and display the recent coaching techniques he employs and present the latest RFU coach materials. “We must encourage our athletes to seek continuity as opposed to contact. We must coach attack as opposed to defense and encourage heads-up play rather than prescribed game plans,” explained Crawford. “While in British Columbia, I look forward to sharing what I have learned in my coaching career, as well as the innovative coach development tools utilized by leading coaches in our modern game.”

BC Rugby Mentor Coaching Series featuring current Wallaby International, Matt Dunning

posted Dec 2 2005
BCRU press release

The British Columbia Rugby Union invites you to an evening with Wallaby Prop Matt Dunning. This is the first in a series of BCRU Mentor Coach evenings. It will be an opportunity for all players, referees and coaches to interact with a player involved at the very highest levels of the game. There is no charge to BC Rugby members for the evening’s activities.

Although Matt has appeared in a Rugby World Cup Final, he is probably best known as brother to Canada’s own Casey and Josh Dunning of the Men’s National and U21 teams respectively!

After making his Test debut in the Rugby World Cup against Namibia and then coming on as a replacement in the Final against England, Matt Dunning went on to play in 11 of the 12 Tests in 2004, as a replacement at either loosehead or tighthead prop.

Bursting onto the Super 12 scene with some individual brilliance in 2001 and 2002, Dunning has since fine-tuned his scrummaging and mobility around the ground. His enthusiasm and commitment to improvement this season has seen him push for a regular starting spot with the Wallabies.

He started in every match for the Waratahs on their way to the Super 12 finals this year and has just come off the Wallabies European tour.

Matt is a very likable individual and is looking forward to a fairly informal environment in BC where he can take some questions, tell a few stories and pass on some useful tips for front rowers young and old. There will be lots of time to ask him about the Rugby World Cup Final in 2003, his 0 drop-goal record in Super 12, why the press picks on him, and England’s Andrew Sheridan!

Front row members of Canada Men’s national team who have just returned from their matches in Europe will join Matt.

CBET-Introduction to Competition Level Coaching Course at Nanaimo Hornets Rugby Club (Dover Rd, Nanaimo) on Sunday December 4th 2005 COURSE CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW

[ed. received the following from Dave Mays "the CBET course in Nanaimo this weekend has been cancelled due to a snow covered field, with forecast snow and freezing conditions"]

Dear Rugby Coach, teacher, manager or rugby enthusiast,

BC Rugby is pleased to announce the NEW CBET (Competency Based Education Training) introduction to competition course. This replaces the old NCCP level 1-2 technical course.

The course is based on your competencies as a coach on the practice field delivering the coaching materials, not just your knowledge of the game.

Any coaches who are delivering any form of contact practices to their athletes, like scrummaging, rucking or tackling, should legally have this coaching qualification for liability purposes, in case of injuries whilst coaching contact related exercises.

The course will be held at Nanaimo Hornets Rugby Club (Dover Rd, Nanaimo) on Sunday December 4th 2005 at 9am and will finish around 3.30pm with a lunch break in between.

Please bring suitable clothing for outdoor practices and a lunch.

If you have an interest in attending, please confirm as soon as possible as we have to a certain amount of participants to present this course.

Thanks in advance!
Yours Sincerely
