Fraser Valley wins Gold in Boys U14: Island wins Gold in Girls U17

[ed. a letter from Norm Upton on the BC Summer Games]
posted July 29 2008

Here's the results of the Summer games. Sorry I don't have the scores but the website is www.kelowna2008.ca.

In the U-17 Girls playing a seven aside game, the Island were very good playing an exciting game and were constantly swinging the ball wide to space. The other zones tended to play the sevens game more like 15's running straight into contact. As the tournament went on the other zones caught on and played a more expansive game. Hats off to the Island they played really well.

The Boy's U-14 were 15 aside with hard, well structured play at the breakdowns. The Fraser Valley were the team to beat and in the end won the Gold undefeated. Vancouver- Squamish winning the silver, and Vancouver Island winning the Bronze. This is the second Summer games with this age group and you can see the zones are better prepared this tournament. The Island came with a bigger team after last summer games, running up against big boys from the Cariboo and the Okanagan.

At this time I'd like to thank Dave Brown, Mike Roberts, the Kelowna Crows and the Okanagan referees society for well organised officials, all games were covered with a referee and touch judges. Scott Johnson and myself traveled up to help at the games and were very pleased to see the quality and the number of officials in Kelowna. Thanks again to all who organised and made it run so smoothly this is my seventh games and I look forward to 2010.

Cheers Norm Upton

U-14 VANCOUVER ISLAND CRIMSON TIDE BC SUMMER GAMES TEAM: OTHER REGIONS LISTED

from John James
posted May 27 2008

Training and identification camps for the Island U14 boys representative team for the BC summer games will be held on June 1st and June 15th.

Saint Michael's ( Bruce Kuklinski ) has offered to host the June 1st camp and Shawnigan Lake ( Gary Dukelow ) has offered to host the June 15th camp. Both camps will run from 11am to 3pm.

Each camp will have a fitness testing component followed by a skills session and will conclude with a trial match.

I would like to encourage a large number of experienced U14 players to attend the camps. Players need not attend both camps but the camps will be a great experience with a variety of great coaches and hopefully some great role models in the form of current national level players.

Please distribute this information to all your Vancouver island rugby club youth contacts as well as middle school contacts.

Thanks,

Craig Lauridsen (Head Coach)

U14 Vancouver-Squamish Rugby Team wins Gold at BC Summer Games

by Connie McGinley
posted Aug 1 2006

After a highly competitive qualifying round, it was Vancouver-Squamish who defeated Fraser Valley 10-5 in the Gold Medal Game of the 2006 BC Summer Games in Kamloops. It was the Valley who defeated the Vancouver-Squamish side in round-robin play (10-7), but thanks to a solid defensive effort and momentum from scoring first, the boy’s from Vancouver-Squamish took home the top honour. The Vancouver-Squamish Coaches; Martin Jones, Rameses Langston and Tom Larisch (who was playing for Canada West @ the NA4 in Ohio during the Summer Games), are very proud of how hard they worked over the last month and a half and how well the boys played in the final game.

In the bronze medal match, it was the Thompson-Okanagan with a strong effort in defeating the Vancouver Island – Central Coast squad by a score of 29-12. The Fraser River Delta side beat Okanagan (2A) 26-7 for the match to decided 5th and 6th position.

BC Rugby moved the age category to Under 14 for the 2006 BC Summer Games, and from all accounts, the boy’s competed hard and with great skill and tact.

“I was impressed with the high level of skill of these young athletes and the venue was superb,” said Director of Provincial Teams, Brian Lynch. “Not only did the coaches and managers do an excellent job of preparing their players, Kamloops RFC did an amazing job of hosting the rugby portion of the Summer Games. It was a fantastic event.”

BC Rugby would like to thank the staff and volunteers from the BC Summer Games office, as well as the coaches and managers from the seven zones who lent their time and expertise to provide an amazing experience for our young rugby players. Thank you also to the referees; Norm Upton, Matt Carpenter and Graeme McCauley.
