Vancouver Island Crimson Tide win the 2006 Ruth Hellerud-Brown trophy: CRIMSON TIDE 24 - FRASER VALLEY RUGBY UNION 5 posted June 13 2006 by David Mays The game was played at Crush Crescent Langley at 2.30pm, Saturday 10th June 2006. Referee; Ian Trevor (VRS) The game was to decide the Hellreud Brown champions for 2006 as both teams had won their previous encounters against Vancouver, Ruth Hellreud Brown was in attendance to watch the game, which all the players appreciated. The conditions were perfect, sun shinning and a Langley playing surface in excellent shape! The game started in a typical fashion in any final game, fast and frantic with both teams trying to assert their skills on the game, ultimately this led to unforced errors at times and a little lack of shape to the game with constant penalty infractions and knock-on’s. The first real chance came on the 7 minute mark when the Tide backline freed up Carolyn Spidell (Cowichan Winger) down the left only to step past 2 defenders and put a foot into touch in what seemed like a certain try. The Fraser Valley forwards were more of an equal match in the loose, the Tide having an edge in the set pieces, similar to the Vancouver game in some ways. This caused the game to become a real fight for possession at the breakdown, with the Tide being constantly pulled for ruck infringements, this meant the Valley found some shape to their game and started offloading in contact to open up the Tide defense on many occasions, Christina Hastie (Bayside #10) was marshalling her team with apparent ease and this led to the first score of the game after 2 offloads in contact put the Valley in behind the Tide’s backline, the ball was then moved fast across the line to the right winger April Jones (United) to scamper into the corner for the 1st try of the game, 5 zero Fraser Valley. The Valley continued to dominate play for the next 10 minutes with the only inroads being made by Marlene Donaldson (Velox #8) off the back of the scrum or on her usual rampaging runs in the loose, once such break nearly led to a try when she off loaded to Angela Mays (Nanaimo #7), who then moved the ball onto Sarah Mclean (Velox #6) who kicked the ball deep into the end zone only to be beat to the touchdown by the Valley fullback covering back. The next passage of play was typical Tide at its best, with the forwards setting up a string of go forward platforms to free up the speedy Tide backline, Haley Wickman (Velox #13) finally got Spidell free down the left side with a nice wide pass, the try line was in her sights with 30 meters to go, but an amazing cover tackle by Geneiveve Gay (SFU #7) stopped Spidell in her tracks with the try line begging. The Tide started to put together passages of play and after 4 phases of excellent offloading and rucking, the ball was spun out to Mays who held the ball up long enough for Shannon Houston (U/C Of Dublin #10) to hit a sweet outside angle to get past her defender and free behind the Valley defensive line, one side step later and she was past the Valley fullback and under the posts, conversion made by Charlotte Haley(Velox #12) and the Tide were in front 7 to 5 (Half Time) After an erratic 1st half of play where the Tide seemed to play with no shape to their game, the half time recovery must have calmed the players and they set about the second half performance in a clinical fashion, phases of play eventually broke the Valleys defense and an excellent angled run by Lori Bibbs (Nanaimo #15) put her totally free in behind the Valley backline only to send a wide pass to Spidell who agonizingly dropped the ball with the line begging. Only a bad pass or a knock on now was stopping the Tide from pulling away in this game. With Donaldson, Mays and Mclean starting to show their back row prowess in the loose now the game was opening up to suit the Tide style. Donaldson was constant threat off the back of the scrum all day and after a quick drive and offload, Angela Mays was put free down the short side with a 2 on 2 situation, one dummy later and she was through the gap with 20 meters to go, a cover tackle from Michelle Monchamp (United #5) couldn’t stop her momentum from carrying her over the line. 12 to 5 and the Tide were in control, or where they? For the next ten minutes the game turned into a penalty festival with the Tide being penalized for constant ruck infractions, this finally led to Charlotte Haley being sin-binned for an apparent tackle off the ball? This ultimately led to the Valley controlling the game for the next stages until Haley finally returned. With a scrum half change by the Tide, Darcy Hill (James Bay #9) coming on for Sue Churchill (Velox #9), the Tide seemed to relax again and play some great rugby for the last ten minutes of the game, Krista Deane (Velox #1) made a 30 meter dash down the short side only to be tackled 5 meters short, a quick pick and go by Hill and the Tide were over or so they thought, held up was the decision. All the pressure finally took its toll on the Valley defense and after a quick steal in midfield, Shannon Houston found a gaping hole and shot the gap to sprint 30 meters to score out wide for her second try of the game, 17 to 5 with a few minutes to play. Almost immediately after the restart the Tide put together a fast series of phases, a quick transfer of the ball across the midfield and Spidell was gone, round the back of the cover defense and under the posts, the conversion was made by Haley and the game was done, 24 to 5 final score! Many thanks to the Langley club for hosting the game and to Jim Ryan for his great support on this venture, also a big thank you to Dave and Cheryl Foreman for providing an excellent after game Chicken BBQ dinner, very appreciated. It was great to see John Thiel coaching the Fraser Valley women, a real eye opener for him I am guessing after coming from professional rugby in UK, well done John on your first step into women’s rugby…. My last words go to the Crimson Tide women, thanks for another great Hellreud Brown campaign, you did the Island proud!
Tide Women defeat Vancouver Rugby Union 31-5: Vancouver Island meet Fraser Valley next weekend by David Mays posted June 4 2006 VANCOUVER RUGBY UNION 5 vs VANCOUVER ISLAND CRIMSON TIDE 31 The game was at Brockton Oval in the grounds of Stanley Park, Vancouver, 2.30pm. Match Official Ian Trevor (VRS). Today was the Tides first run of the year against a Vancouver team who had come off a loss to Fraser Valley the previous weekend. Knowing that teams always learn from their mistakes and get fired up from losing games, the first 20 minutes was an even contest, Tide having the edge in the set piece, Vancouver having an edge in the loose, in a game littered with handling errors in this opening period. After the initial scrappiness of play, both teams started to find their shape and play some attractive rugby in beautiful conditions, the Tide were starting to put together some sequences of play and after the 22 minute mark, Jill Caruthers (UVIC Winger) was on the end of a passage of play involving all 15 players to score in the corner to give the tide a well produced try, the convert was a little too far out for Charlotte Haley (Velox Center) to convert. After this score it seemed to relax the Tide players and sequences of play were more forthcoming and seemed to open the game up more, this eventually brought the second try for the Tide. After an initial break by Shannon Houston (U/C of Dublin Stand Off) and tremendous support from the Tide back-row, the ball was swung back across the line to the far left side for Carolyn Spidell (Cowichan, Winger) to score left of the uprights. Conversion was missed, 10 zero with 26 minutes played. This seemed to fire up the Vancouver forwards and after several passages of play, the Tide were trenched deep in their 22 for the next 10 minutes, finally an opportunity arose from a lineout and Carolyn Spidell was sprung free up the middle, with 65 meters to go, who knew whether she would go the distance, this being her 1st game back after breaking her left leg in the domestic season, the rest is history as they say, under the posts to score, convert made by Haley and the Tide went into half time with a comfortable 17 zero lead. The second half was similar to the first, with the first 20 minutes being untidy and many unforced errors, Vancouver initially dominating possession. The Tide had brief moments of play, but were stemmed by a tenacious young Vancouver pack and their backs also seemed to have locked up the Tides powerful midfield. Finally the Tide put together a passage of play involving a multitude of players before finally Sarah Mclean broke the defensive line, to dive and twist over the line to score the Tides 4th try. Vancouver then kicked into gear and finally got their rewards after a great passage of play involving their forwards with tremendous pick and go options (a la Canterbury Crusaders), they got their try with a pick and go around the edge of the ruck, in a very well taken try by their young pack. With the Tide's backs not getting any joy through the middle in the second half, the game plan had to change and this is where the dynamic trio of Marlene Donaldson (Velox, #8), Sarah Mclean (Velox, #6) and Angela Mays (Nanaimo, #7) came into their own, after an initial pick and go by Donaldson, Sarah Mclean was in close support to offload to Mays who found another 2 gears to sprint 55 meters untouched to dive and score under the posts to put the game out of Vancouver’s reach, conversion was successful by Haley. This was to be the final try of the game and the last 10 minutes fizzled out with both teams tiring in the heat. The only concern for the Tide was Erin Davies (Nanaimo, #5) hobbling off with a knee concern, hopefully the X rays will come up clear on this injury? All told it was a great game to watch in phases and I am sure the Vancouver players will be pleased in their apparent improvements from their previous game against the Fraser Valley. The young Vancouver players should be proud of their efforts, very well played and the Vancouver player of the game was none other than Jackie Small who controlled the whole thing with apparent ease at Scrum Half, well played Jackie. On the Tide's front, players who stepped up to play their first Hellerud-Brown games were Krista Deane (Velox, #3) and Brandi Iio (Velox, #1), both had stellar games and did their club proud. The outstanding trio in the back-row (Donaldson, Mays, Mclean) had a tremendous contribution in this result and showed another dimension to back row play, well done ladies! Next week the Tide travel away again to play the Valley in Langley at Cresent Park, Kick Off 2.30pm.
