To the Generous Rugby Supporters for the NSW7’s Team

posted Mar 24 2007
[ed. we received this letter from Colette McAuley on behalf of the National Senior Women’s 7’s Team. We would like to thank our readers who helped us to raise $420 for the Women's team, this letter is for you.]

On behalf of the National Senior Women’s 7’s team traveling to Hong Kong, we would like to thank you for your support of Canadian Rugby. Your contribution has helped this newly established program to experience an opportunity of a lifetime representing Canada at the International Hong Kong Women’s Rugby 7’s Tournament, details shown below.

It’s through the continuous support of family, friends and the rugby community that these athletes can pursue their aspirations of representing Canada on the rugby pitch. “There seems to be no end to the generosity of the Canadian rugby community. I saw great support for the preparation of the Women’s Rugby World Cup and now the support of this very new women’s 7’s program,” says team member Colette McAuley. The vision and organizational support of Rugby Canada has allowed this new program to come to fruition, which not only will increase rugby skill development, but also has qualified the female rugby players for Sport Canada carding.

The growth of the women’s game is dependent on the success of each program and the exposure of those successes. When approached by the 7’s team, Mark Bryant was the first to step up and offer his assistance and resources. The team is very appreciative of all efforts made, which will increase the appeal to the rugby community and the corporate world. “Since we are a new team we need to get exposure, and we hope that as we achieve success we will gain more support from corporate communities. Thanks for your publicity of our team,” states captain Brooke Hilditch. The advantage of the NSW7’s team is that they have an organized schedule for the next two years leading up to the 2009 Women’s World Cup 7’s that consistently puts them in USA, Hong Kong, Europe, Dubai and various locations in Canada. Beating the USA for the trophy was a great feeling in San Diego and now the team will see exactly where they stand with their first game against the World’s best and winners of last years HK 7’s, New Zealand. Thanks again for your support.

Yours in rugby,

National Senior Women’s 7’s Team

ABOUT YOURSELF: Born and raised in small-town New-Brunswick, it is a common misconception that my superhuman strength and stamina comes from hucking lobster traps out of a fishing boat. The reality is, bear wrestling has been my main form of training. I began playing rugby 5 years ago, when I launched my 7's career at the World famous Truro 7's rugby tournament. My favourite holiday is April Fool's Day.

I love playing with my club team when I am not at a Canadian event. I moved to BC away from my family to pursue this goal of mine. I was told I would not do very well if I stayed based in Manitoba, so I moved. It was the best decision I have made to date. I miss my family, but what a difference in the game! I have officially competed internationally on two different Canadian National Teams.

Now that 7 a side rugby for women is growing to the point of a first ever world cup, I have new goals to set my training towards. I was a member of the National 7s team that ended up second in the Los Angeles Tournament in 2006. Then, the following year I was a member of the team that went on to win the San Diego 7s tournament in 2007. I really enjoy playing 7s because it is a fast-paced exciting game where you are always involved from start to finish. I am looking forward to progressing with this team towards the 2009 World Cup.
