Valley High Make it 3 for 3 in the BC 7s Series posted July 11 2010 [ed. comments below] Valley High have done it again, winning the $1500 prize at the CanAm 7s this weekend. They had to defeat the Bayside Ambassadors at the whistle in the semi-finals with Thyssen de Goede scoring a late try to pull out the victory 15-12. They then went on to defeat last year's champion Old Puget Sound by a score of 17-15 to claim the tournament's top prize. Sean White was voted the tournament MVP. Phil Mack was at the Stampede 7s this weekend so wasn't taking his usual place with the team. This weekend's team included: Thyssen de Goede, Jake de Goede, John Moonlight, David Moonlight, Sean White, Tony la Carte, Dean Van Camp, Ed Fairhurst, Jon Thiel and Sean Duke. In the Social Division it was Chuckanut Bay over Del Rey 33-28 in OT. In the Women's Division it was Emerald City Mud Hens from Seattle over Bayside 24-19. There were 24 teams in attendance with a crowd of 1500 estimated by organizers. According to Paul Horne, the tournament organizer, next year the CanAm tournament will be part of a series with seven other tournaments, the series winner getting $10,000. 7s rugby is going to grow every year with the money pot getting bigger and the stakes higher. It can only benefit 7s rugby in North America and we are witnessing the early stages of professional rugby in North America, I believe.
