BC Remains Undefeated at Under 14 Level: BC 22 - Ontario 20

BC took on Ontario's 1st XV in their final match of the 2009 under 14 festival. The game was played at Fletcher's fields under overcast skies.

BC started the game strong, intent on establishing their expansive game plan that had been so effective throughout the tournament. In the early stages, it looked as though BC were going to win with ease. A wealth of possession combined with quick ball movement saw BC winger Kyle Bodnarchuck score a try within minutes of starting the game. The try was converted by BC fullback Tobin Sydney-Smith. The Ontario team quickly made adjustments, however, and started to apply immense pressure at the breakdown. By doing so, they were able to slow the BC attack and also generate turnovers. As a result, they scored a try after some strong inside running and excellent support play. BC seemed flustered by their lack of possession and starting taking penalties; one resulting in a successful Ontario penalty kick. BC and Ontario then traded tries making the half time score 13-12 in favour of Ontario.

BC started well in the second half. They were competing much more effectively at the breakdown and created many turnovers of their own. One of these turnovers allowed them to move the ball quickly to the open side wing. BC winger Kyle Bodnarchuck, as he had done so many times throughout the tournament, capitalised on the opportunity and scored for BC. Ontario applied considerable pressure from the ensuing kick-off and had BC pinned on their own goal line. BC panicked and turned the ball over, resulting in another Ontario try. Following the restart, Ontario kicked deep into BC territory. This time, however, BC remained calm and relieved pressure through a series of kicks over the Ontario backs. BC sensed an opportunity and moved the ball downfield, only to be tackled 5 metres away from the Ontario line. Ontario was now under immense pressure, and made uncharacteristic mistakes. From their own line-out they tapped the ball down to their scrum half. BC hooker Keegan Carson tackled the Ontario scrum half resulting in a dropped ball. With the ball bouncing around in the Ontario in-goal area, BC #8 Marshall Fuller pounced on the ball to score for BC. The final score was 22-20 for BC.

BC Defeats Alberta 50-6; Face Ontario Next

Fletcher's Fields, overcast, light rain

The BC team came out very flat against a very determined Alberta squad. Hands in the ruck by BC in the first few minutes gave Alberta a penalty kick in front of the posts.

With a 3 to 0 lead Alberta kept the ball in tight and away from BC's speed and controlled the ball for the first 15 min. BC continued to take penalties and give up possesion until scrum half Spencer Miller picked the ball from the scrum and set up second rower David Morey for a try. Mitchell Neil made the convert to give BC a 7 to 3 lead. The try was controversial as scrum half picks are not allowed. BC went back to sleep giving up another penalty in front of the posts. At half time it was 7 to 6 for BC.

The second half was a different story as BC stuck to their game plan and played unselfish rugby moving the ball and producing 43 unanswered points.

Tries came from centre David Pollen, second rower James Porter, fullback Harjun Gill, 3 tries for winger Kyle Bondarchuck and a beautiful game ending try by Scrum half Fynn Kehal catching the ball at full pace on a pop up pass from winger Will Chamberlain.

Eighth man Marshall Fuller made 4 converts to make the final 50 to 6 for BC.

The final game is Sat morning vs Ontario's top players.

BC Maintains Perfect Record with Two Wins Over Ontario

posted July 23 2009

The BC under 14 rugby team faced their toughest challenge of the festival today as they played matches against Ontario blue and Ontario red. Having relocated to Fletchers fields in Toronto, the team was hungry to maintain in unblemished record in the tournament.

The first game was a physical encounter as both teams came out with intensity and emotion. While BC had the edge in territory and possession throughout the game, the Ontario team was relentless on defence and continued to apply pressure at the breakdown area. As the game progressed, the Ontario team gradually wore down and BC were able to assert themselves and execute their expansive game plan. BC ultimately came away with a 19 to 10 victory.

Scoring:

Tries: Kyle Bodnarchuck (3)
Conversions: Mitchell Neil, Tobin Sydney- Smith

In the second game of the day, a fatigued BC team came out slow against Ontario red. The Ontario team sensed an opportunity to beat BC. They a were able to sustain pressure and, thanks to relentless defence by team BC, they only came away with 2 penalty kicks. BC quickly turned their game around by matching the intensity of their opponents. Again, sustained pressure from BC on attack and defence, gradually wore down the Ontario team. With more space available to attack, BC were able to capitalise on more scoring opportunities. Final score was 15 to 6 for BC.

Scoring:

Tries: Ben Cunningham, Kyle Bodnarchuck (2)

Team BC now has another rest day before playing against Alberta on Friday, followed by a match on Saturday against Ontario 1st XV.

BC U14 Start with 64-0 Win Over Southwest Ontario

by Don Brown
posted July 21 2009

The BC under 14 team got off to a great start in the 2009 rugby festival.

Playing at St. George's rugby society in London, Ontario, the team faced a representative team from Southwestern Ontario. The match was a tune up for the festival which begins Wednesday and includes teams from Alberta and Ontario.

BC got off to a slow start as they struggled, initially, to mesh with one another and execute their game plan that utilized their exceptional team speed.

However, they dominated territory and possession and eventually capitalized on their scoring opportunities.

BC also played well defensively as they generated many turnovers when their opponents had the ball. Their ability to create turnovers was a main focus of their pre-tournament camp and the coaches were pleased by the athletes' ability to apply these skills.

When the final whistle blew the score was 64 to 0 for BC. Twelve tries were scored by different members of the team. The coaching staff was impressed by this balanced scoring and the wide range of scoring opportunities they created throughout the game.

Tuesday is a day off for the athletes as they visit Niagara falls. On Wednesday the team will play against Ontario at Fletchers fields.

BC TEAMS SHARE THE SPOILS ON THE FINAL DAY OF THE PROVINCIAL U14 FESTIVAL

by Dave Brown
posted Aug 10 2008

GAME 9: Ontario v Alberta

With both teams having suffered injuries on the first two days of the Festival, some players from both teams had the opportunity to display their versatility on the final Day. Ontario #8, Djustice Sears-Durk, who had been prominent with some power running, played in the backline and after an opening 10 minute stalemate he scored Ontario’s first try. The score moved from 5-0 to 10-0 when Sawyer Heron scored his 4th try of the tournament to make it 10-0. Sears-Burke then broke the line to score at the posts and James Mitcheu converted to move the score to 17-0 at the half. Alberta refused to buckle any further in the 2nd half and consistently won good ruck ball to put pressure on Ontario before Levi Normandeau crossed to make it 17-5. Alberta kept Ontario at bay with some sterling defense from Kris Alaber before Liam Grimes scored Ontario’s final try, converted by Mitcheu, to make it 24-5.
Ontario 24 – Alberta 5

GAME 10: BC ‘White’ v BC ‘Gold’

BC White, still on the high of defeating Gold in the final match of Day 2, started strongly again with David Rose scoring an early try. BC Gold then responded immediately, socking White with three tries and two converts in 15 minutes, to take a 19-5 half-time lead. Elio Pinani, Mitchell Harvey and Zach Smith tallied tries while Kevin Catliff added two conversions. Shocked by this response, White got back in the game through a Darren Levasseur try. Gold came back with again with tries from Nathan Mayer and Shane Bergman and another Catliff conversion to take a commanding 31-10 lead. Daniel Tsang scored for White at the whistle, and with James Pitlabo converting, the game finished at 31-17 for Gold and the teams tied with 4-1 records.
BC ‘White’ 17 – BC ‘Gold’ 31

GAME 11: Alberta v BC ‘Gold’

With no time to rest Gold started its final game against Alberta, taking an early 7-0 lead through a Matrix Gothergood try and a Trevor Neville convert. Justin Douglas made it 12-0 before Levi Normandeau scored his second of the day for Alberta to make 12-5 at the half. Douglas completed his and the Festival’s first hatrick with two scores after the break as Gold pulled into 22-5 lead. Alberta then roared back into contention with two quickly taken tries from Reid Watkins and Brandon Harrison to close the gap to 22-15 before a last minute try by Jimmy Kin, converted by Catliff, made the final score 29-15.
Alberta 15- BC ‘Gold’ 29

GAME 12: Ontario v BC ‘White’

BC ‘White’ now had to win its final game to draw level with ‘Gold’. White responded in dramatic fashion by soring four unanswered tries though Nathan Yanigiya, James MacKenzie (2) and Darren Levasseur, two converted by Leighton Gabbidon, to take a commanding 24-0 lead. Djustice Sears-Durk added his third of the day to close the gap to 24-5 at the break. Ontario pressed to get back into the game throughout the second half and were only denied by determined BC tackling. Almost at the whistle, Daniel Tsang scored at the posts, and with Pitlabo converting the game and Festival ended with a BC ‘White’ 31-5 win.
Ontario 5 – BC ‘White’ 31

The end of the Provincial Festival finished with presentations by all three squads and thanks to the host groups, VIRU, St George’s and Capilano RFC. BC ‘WHITE’ REMAINS UNDEFEATED AFTER DAY 2 OF THE U14 PROVINCIAL FESTIVAL

by Dave Brown
posted Aug 9 2008

Day 2 of the Provincial U14 Festival between BC, Ontario and Alberta started once again at the fabulous St George’s School playing field.

GAME 5: Ontario v Alberta
Ontario pressed early and often, containing Alberta to play within its own half. Cory Taverner eventually opened the scoring to make it 5-0 and then fullback Sawyer Heron, impressive once again, made it 10-0 before the half. Alberta competed ferociously in the loose after the half in an attempt to get back into the game. When Sawyer added a second try, it sealed a win for Ontario but did not stop Alberta from working for a score. Matt Geisler and Jon Lorimer crossed for further Ontario tries to see the Eastern province earn its first win, 25-0.
Ontario 25- Alberta 0

GAME 6: Alberta v BC ‘White’
Due to the rescheduling which allowed both Alberta and Ontario players to head off to the CFL game early, Alberta faced a back to back game against BC ‘White’. BC dominated the game from start, powering to a 22-0 lead at the break and adding a further 33 points in the second half to complete a 53-0 win. Tries came from outstanding #8, James MacKenzie (2), Centre Nathan Yanagiya (2), Jordan Best, Daniel Tsang, Darren Lavasseur, David Rose and Jordan Sullivan. GAME 7: BC ‘Gold’ v Ontario
This game was a different affair than the game between the two teams Day 1. It piled the pressure on BC in the second period, closing the gap to 10-5 though another Cory Taverner try. The Ontario players then laid siege on the BC line for almost the entire 2nd half with only staunch and sometimes desperate BC defending keeping them at Bay and giving the ‘Gold’ another win.
BC ‘Gold’ 10 – Ontario 5

GAME 8: BC ‘White’ v BC ‘Gold’
Despite finishing the day playing against each other, both BC teams left nothing on the sidelines as they defended their undefeated records. Eric Bleim and the skilled stand-off Jordan Best gave ‘White’ a 10-0 lead at the half. Although ‘Gold’ attempted to get back into the game, the rested ‘White’ continued to impress with further tries from Yaganiya, MacKenzie and Rose along with a MacKenzie conversion to finish 25-0 winners and remain the only undefeated team in the Festival.

GAME 1: BC ‘Blue’ v Alberta
The first game saw BC ‘Blue’ take the field against Alberta. It was soon apparent that the home team was not playing in Blue but in Gold! Colour was not an issue however as a Zach Smith try and Justin Douglas conversion gave ‘Gold’ a 7-0 lead. Although BC has a territorial and possession advantage, strong defense from Alberta limited them to this score at the half. A further try by Bo Wold stretched the lead to 12-0 before Hunter Turnbull scored for Alberta to make it 12-5 for BC at the Final Whistle. This team will now be referred to as BC ‘Gold’.
BC ‘Gold’ 12 – Alberta 5

GAME 2: BC ‘White’ v Ontario
Immediately following came BC ‘White’ against Ontario. It was Ontario that started out more fluently, putting BC under pressure and being rewarded with a try by full back Sawyer Hunter. BC responded through a great individual effort from centre Darren Lavesseur to tie the game at 5-5. Ontario hit back with a score from speedy winger Bobby O’Shaugnessy to take a 10-5 half time lead. The second half proved a tense affair for both teams before a period of BC ‘White’ pressure resulted in a try for Brandon Kirton. David Rose made the conversion to give BC a 12-10 advantage that would hold to the final whistle.
BC ‘White’ 12 – Ontario 10

GAME 3: Alberta v BC ‘White’

GAME 4: Ontario v BC ‘Gold’
BC’Gold’ had took time to find a rhythm in its opening game against Alberta. There was no such hesitation in this game as it roared to a 24-o half time lead, playing some storming rugby. Justin Douglas, with a brace, Trenton Shelley and Zach Smith crossed for BC and Smith added two conversions. The BC squads were chosen from the regional teams that competed at the recent BC Summer Games competition in Kelowna and will be coached by Martin Jones and Mike Stiles and managed by Don Brown. All three were on hand last season in Calgary and watched and evaluated the talent at the games in Kelowna before selecting players from every region of BC to play in the upcoming Festival.

Ontario and Alberta have already begun their tours with games against the Vancouver Island U14s in Victoria. They will be joined in Vancouver by groups of interested parents from both Provinces and by families from across BC as Canada’s developing talent goes head to head in the first taste of inter-provincial competition. The Schedule at St George’s Senior School Fields is as follows:
