Westshore RFC Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Beginning as Velox Rugby Club on October 20th with Triple Header
from Clancy McDonnell
October 20th marks 50 years for the club. It’s morphed three times in its 50 year life, bearing the names, traditions and members of Velox, the Valhallians and Valkyries, and now Westshore. The celebration on October 20th will be epic!
The schedule will be jam-packed, starting off with some top-quality games:
10:30 – Junior Boys Rugby
11:30 – Valkyries vs Cowichan
1:00 – Premier Reserve vs Vancouver Rowing Club
2:45 – Premier Valhallians vs Vancouver Rowing Club
We’ll take photos at the start of each game with the captains and various life members. The Westshore captains will also hand over small commemorative gifts to the opposing captains. The match ball for the final game will be delivered from the heavens by the Victoria Sky Divers!
Festivities will commence directly after the final match in a huge 30 x 45 foot tent. We’ll have a full bar, delicious curry from our gracious sponsors Sizzling Tandoor, and a live DJ to keep the atmosphere bumping.
We will award two $500 scholarships to graduating junior players – The Matt MacNeil Award and The David Wong Award. Founding member Stephen Hume will give a speech on the club’s history.
At 8 p.m. our bus will be shuttling party-goers to one of our favourite spots – The Gorge Point Pub – where the party will continue until the wee hours of the morning.
