Adam Ustik Reports From Cardiff, Wales: Canada 10 - Italy 33

posted June 22 2008

Canada lost 33-10 to Italy today, Sunday June 22nd in Cardiff Arms Park in Cardiff, Wales. There were strong winds crossfield but being in the leeside of the Mellenium Stadium allowed some good kicking by the Italian side, in particular since Canada gave them ample penalties with which to kick points.

Italy scored 3pts from the first of six sucessful penalty kicks at the 7th minute and again at the 15th minute on another Canada error, making the score 6 to 0. After the kick off the Italian backs scored a try through a hole in the Canadian line big enough to drive a lorry through at the 17th minute. Italy kicked two more penalties at 21 and 33 minutes making the half time score 17 - 0 for Italy.

Canada's play in the first half was marred by a multitude of penalties and lacklustre play as they consistently tried to barge their way through the Italian defence as if they were trying to breach Hadrian's Wall with an equal amount of success.

In the second half Peter Jawl scored 3 pts on a penalty kick at the 42nd minute. Italy responded with a run from the 25 metre line through Canada's backs for a fine try in the corner. Score 22 - 3 Italy. Conner Trainor scored Canada's lone try at the 62nd minute which Peter Jawl converted making the score 22 - 10 for Italy. Italy scored a penalty kick at the the 65th minute and their final try at the 75th minute making the final score 33 - 10 for Italy.

In my opinion, the Italian backs were able to flow through Canada's defence like Vino Rosso flowing at an Italian wedding. Canada's tackles were not of the quality one would expect at a World Championship. There did not seem to be any game plan to mitigate the many penalties that were being assessed to Canada by the Welsh referee. Having watched Canada play throughout this tournament, I would say this was not the best game that Canada has played.

Adam Ustik Reports From Newport, Wales: Canada 10 - Scotland 15

posted June 19 2008

One could say that Scotland won the game but it would be more appropriate to state that Canada snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Playing in weather conditions more appropriate for November rather than late June, blustery winds and rain squalls were the order of the day. Doubtless the weather caused both sides to mishandle the ball on several occasions.

Canada opened the scoring at the 8 minute mark with a well played backfield movement starting on the sideline on the 35 metre line in Canada's end and ending with a try by number 10 Matt Evans making it possible for Nathan Hirayama to convert giving Canada the lead 7 to 0. Canada was pressing the Scottish team when a pass interception from a scrum led to a 70 metre run by a Scottish player for a try at the 15 minute mark making the score 7 to 5 for Canada. At 22 minutes Nathan Hirayama kicked a penalty for 3 more points making the score 10 - 5 at the half time.

In the second half both teams moved to and fro with scrums and lineouts with Canada holding it's own. It appeared that victory was within Canada's grasp when at the 36th minute Canada made a fatal error in attemping to run the ball from a free kick from their own 35 metre line rather protecting their lead by kicking the ball resulting in a scrum on the 5 metre line. Canada won the scrum but a mishandling of the ball to the player in goal for a clearing kick resulted in a Scottish player falling on the ball for a tying try of 5 points. After 80 minutes the game score was 10 -10 necessitating sudden death overtime in 10 minute segments. After 10 minutes of overtime the score remained 10 -10, fans wondering how long the evenly matched teams would continue thier struggle.

In the second overtime Canada was unable to capitalize on some opportunities when Scotland pressured Canada deep in the Canadian end with scrum play resulting in the winning score at the 6 minute mark making the final a 15 - 10 victory for Scotland.

It was an evenly played game that Canada should have won except for one tactical error near the end of regulation time that cost them a potential victory.

Adam Ustik Reports From Newport, Wales: Canada 17 - Fiji 10

posted June 14 2008

Canada defeated Fiji 17 -10 in a hard fought match Saturday afternoon, June 14th in Newport, Wales. Nathan Hirayama opened the scoring for Canada at the one minute mark with a penalty kick for 3pts. The first half of play was in blustery weather with showers and wind having an effect on the Fijian passing with Canada taking advantage of the Fijian errors on several occasions.

Hirayama kicked another 3pts at 22 minutes then Keegan Selby playing number 7 picked up a loose ball at the 23 minute mark on the five metre line and scored a try which made the score 11 to zero for Canada. Fiji in turn scored a try at the 28 minute mark to make the score at half time 14 to 5.

The second half was a struggle by both sides with good defence by Canada with some questionable calls by a New Zealand Referee much to the ire of a partisan crowd. Canada was awarded a penalty kick at the 41st minute which Hirayama kicked to make the score 17-5. Fiji scored the last points of the game with a try at the 46th minute making the final score 17 to 10. Nathan Hirayama was named player of the match for Canada and rightfully so.

As a matter of interest to the olde Ebb Tide crowd that attended the 1999 World Cup in Wales, the team tour program is still proudly displayed in the Seabank Hotel in Porthcawl.

Adam Ustik Reports From Newport, Wales: England 60 - Canada 18

posted June 11 2008

England defeated Canada by the score of 60-18 on Tuesday, June 10 in Newport Wales. England played a very aggressive first half and overwhelmed Canada by scoring seven tries due to to poor defense, especially the lack of tackles which pemitted three easy tries in the span of five minutes. England scored seven tries in the first 40 minutes making the score 48 -3. Canada's only score was a penalty kick by Nathan Hirayama (UVic) for three points.

Canada opened the second half with Nathan Hirayama kicking a penalty for three points, England quickly countered with a try. Sean White (JBAA) scored an unconverted try at the 74 minute mark but England replied with its last converted try at the 80 minute mark. Thyssen de Goede (JBAA) intercepted a pass and scored a try in the dying minutes of the game which was converted by Hirayama making the final tally 60 to 18.

There was a boisterous contingent of Canucks in the stands cheering Canada on as well as the Welsh supporters who clearly favoured the Canadians.
