Great Reader Feedback from Coaching Staff, Former National Players and Other Respected Members of the Community

[ed. I received so much feedback today that I thought a new column is needed, Sunday Feedback. I'll paraphrase the comments as required and keep them anonymous to encourage more of the same every week.]

First Maori Player for Canada?

Contrary to your remarks regarding Clay Panga as “the first Maori that will play for Canada”.

I know of at least one before him. His name is Shayne Brown. Shayne came to Canada after marrying a local girl from Port Coquitlam around 1988.

He left before his trial for the New Zealand Maori was to take place. He was a member of the “Red Lions RFC” then the “Brit Lions” after amalgamation.

He played for Canada in 1989 under coach Ian Birtwell.

Anyone that saw Shayne play in his prime would marvel at his powerful runs.

Shayne played And Captained the Brit Lions up to about 2000. He has since moved to Australia.

I enjoy checking BC Rugby News on a daily basis. Keep up the good work.

Yellow Journalism?

Your writer responsible for Seen Heard and Confirmed edition 2 loses what little credibility he or she has when the listing of "money men" includes Ted Rogers who is dead, and Jimmy Patterson (no doubt intended to be Jimmy Pattison) as potential donors to the RC cause. These glaring errors situate the writer in a glass house, with all its perils.

I am also curious about what the motivation behind slagging the two NSMT managers, Rodger and Des. Is there some factual basis for all the innuendo that they are hapless incompetents?

I for one am not a big fan of the yellow press syndrome and would prefer to read articles and opinion pieces that are more reasoned and less inflammatory.

Berating the Strength and Conditioning Coach?

I am not sure why you are continually berating the work being done by the carded players but you are mistaken again about their availability to play.

Although they are all being catered to individually for training needs, they all are being encouraged to train and play with their respective clubs each week as part of their training. Marshall played last weekend for the Caps and injured himself which is the reason he did not play yesterday.

Also if you have concerns with our strength and conditioning coach then you may want to contact him directly for an explanation because he does an excellent job with the players, you mentioned the play of Morgan and Kleeberger over the world cup and the November tour, these two are probably our best conditioned players and that is in a large part attributable to Tyler Goodale. He is a top professional in his field and RC is lucky to have him.

Wrong About Dan White's Work Ethic?

Dan White's work ethic. As far as club practices and events, Dan is one of the most dedicated players we have. What I'm saying is, if he gets into the Canadian system, he's going to turn up and do the work.

But I'm not sure the Canadian system would be that beneficial to Dan. After practicing with a number of carded athletes, these guys are not fit. I'm sure they're impressive in the gym enviroment but you get them doing 4 laps of the field and they struggle.

They aren't doing any cardio!!!

So obviously the Canada coaches, want the players to bulk up. Dan's already bulked up. A lot of so called experts take one look at Dan and say he's out of shape. Dan is out of shape as far as his standards go, but he's in the same shape a lot of these carded guys are.

Dan's fitness at the moment is on par with [name of specific carded player].

Former National Player Speaks Out

I have not had a lot of discussions with you but I wanted to drop you a line about the website. I have stepped back from rugby this year... In doing so it has allowed me to look at RC in a different lens. I just wanted to say thank you for posting opinions that need to be circulated. RC makes many poor decisions and without people like you who expose these decisions inept people within the organization will continue to run RC. Hopefully things will change cause we all want one thing, for RC to improve.
