Scribes vs Kats Match Report

By The Scribe
posted March 30 2009

While for many the focus on Saturday was across the bridge between the two Spring undefeated teams who reside at the top of the provincial ladder, earlier in the day, in East Vancouver there was a similar match being played between the two undefeated teams of the “Independent League”. And as earlier match reports have touted the significance of two of the more prosperous clubs in the lower mainland competing, there was just as much interest in what was transpiring at the picturesque John Hendry Park on Trout Lake.

In this modern era of Premier Leagues and the like I would wager that there are many new players who would not have had the opportunity to play against the Kats RFC nor the Scribes RFC and would be forgiven for thinking that they played a minor role in the BCRU.

However many will know that for several decades the Kats dominated the local rugby scene and the Big Green House on MacDonald housed several men’s & junior teams. The fierce competition to acquire and keep new members in the Westside has not been easy but although reduced to one team they have been undefeated for several seasons.

Likewise the Scribes have also seen better times and once fielded three men’s teams, despite being one of three clubs ensconced in the gritty Eastside. Unfortunately even with the departure of Ex Britannia & the Trojans, player retention and acquisition has been a struggle and the legendary “Ring around the Rosy” has been relegated to the dim confines of the clubhouse (which has its own legendary status!) & the Eastside Gentlemen on Sunday’s .

So with similar recent pasts and a strong association this game meant a lot to both clubs and supporters. And it was heartening to see a strong turnout of alumni from both clubs who braved the elements to bear witness to the Kats striving to maintain their unbeaten streak and the Scribes hoping to avenge a series of drubbings at their hands. As a side note and perhaps a reflection on what was expected, veteran referee Mr. Dave Burns was heard to gloat on the misfortune of his colleague who was selected to adjudicate this match only to become ill, as he relished the opportunity to have a first hand view of the match about to take place.

As for the match itself, it was a very intense affair with the Scribes asserting early pressure. 15 minutes in No. 14 Freddie Tuita capitalized on a missed kick for touch and raced down the sideline to beat 2 tacklers and score in the corner. His brother Ben calmly slotted the conversion from wide-out and the Scribes led 7-0.

A penalty was added a few minutes later by Fly half Ben Tuita to make it 10-0. This seemed to energize the Kats and strategic kicking moved the ball down into the Scribes end. Strong rucking & mauling led by the lanky ,but feisty Tim Swain (reminiscent of a young Pat O’Gorman) pushed the Scribes defenses back and a well earned push-over try right on the half time whistle made it 10-5 Scribes.

After halftime the Kats had the momentum with play being controlled by No.10 Julian and they showed a willingness to run the ball with plenty of players in support. But a great run, against the run of play, once again by Freddie Tuita, put the Scribes up 17-5. For the next 15 minutes the Kats put tremendous pressure on the Scribes and were the beneficiaries of a Scribes handling error deep in their end which resulted in a try by the Kats No.8 to make the score 17-12 .

With 10 minutes remaining the Scribes sideline were just hoping to hold on, and were fortunate to be rewarded a penalty about 35 yards out which Ben Tuita calmly slotted through to make it 20-12. Much to the relief of the many Scribes supporters and players this seemed to take the wind out of the Kats sails, and another penalty kick a few minutes later cemented the 23-12 victory for the Scribes.

With the completion of the game both sides and supporters adjourned to the Scribes temporary home, The Grandview Legion and the topic of conversation quickly moved from who was the victor on the day to discussions on how both clubs could prosper and grow in this era. The shame of the matter was the game reflected levels of talent far beyond the pigeon hole of “Independent League”. But for clubs perpetually struggling for numbers a move to the 2 team league is not yet a viable option (although that is the objective of our player development) and many yearn for the days before the Premier competition was introduced when the smaller clubs had the option to enter teams at any level of competition.

With the championship format for the Independent League murky and uncertain, both clubs can take comfort in the fact that we continue to survive and in our own way prosper. The rugby community should wish us well, as it would be a shame if a new generation of rugger’s were not able to partake in a post game celebration at two of the legendary clubhouses of Vancouver rugby.
