CAP WOMEN DOMINATE PREMIER FINAL: ALL OR NOTHING FINISH TO CAPS V KATS DIVISION III FINAL by Craig Slay posted May 17 2010 Women's Premier Final Timing is everything and peaking going in the playoffs be it the Canucks or a local rugby team is what everyone and every team is looking for. The Cap ladies had struggled all year with injuries and player availability but for the most part they all seemed to get back in to the squad at the very end of the season with the exception of National team star player and BCRU Female athlete of the year 2009 Mandy Marchak. Nothing was going to be easy for the North Shore ladies and they needed everything they had if they were to take the title. In order to make the playoffs the ladies had to win the last season game against third place Meralomas who had been strong all year. The girls did what they needed to do with a 24-17 win and the Caps then found themselves in the playoffs at 4th place which lined them up against the number one team, 2009 BCRU champions and undefeated in over a year Burnaby Lakers. The Capilano premier stepped it up one more step and owned the semi final over a great Burnaby side 21-0. By all accounts the Cap women played strong and seemed to be improving minute by minute and game by game. The other semi final saw 2nd place United beat the Meralomas with little if any time left by a kick 16-15. Klahanie was by far and away the better choice over UBC or Brockton for the finals. The Grandstands were full and parking wasn't a problem and was free, as well the food service had a steady line at its doors. For all of the teams that were playing the location being just off the highway was far better than the 15 kilometre drive through busy city streets to find limited parking. United had brought with them a very large and vocal fan base and was well supported with their 2nd team winning the earlier 2nd division final. The mindset was full on and deserving of any final. The girls from both teams were totally focused with the task at hand and wanted the hardware. Right off the whistle the Caps let the United girls they were not going to be pushed around and this was their home. The number 8 for United not one but twice off the first two line outs went off side and took out a player without the ball. The Ref Al Tynan was going to penalise her but the Cap player stood up and retaliated with a couple of well placed hay makers which got her a stearn talking to and a deserved penalty. That said the United player never did infringe the Cap territory again so one can argue if the penalty to the Caps was a good one or bad one. By and large this game was won in the trenches. The powerful front row backed up by a incredible mobile and strong back five were first at every ruck and breakdown and blew off any United players that were close by. You can't win a game without the ball and the Caps had a lot of ball. The first points came with the speedy Cap fullback crashing up the middle only to get pulled down on the five meter line, with clean recycled ball new Canada invite front row and ex-national wrestling champion Hillary Leith punched it over and the convert was made by Andrea Burk 7-0. Natalie Davis the number nine for the Capilanos was the crowd favourite and the one that certain United fans loved to hate. She was everywhere being drawn to the ball like a magnet. With out a doubt Natalie was the spark on the plug that fired up the Cap team. The Caps went in for the second tally after countless attacks where the Caps managed to control the ball and recycle over and over 12-0 Still very much on fire the North Shore girls front row connected to set up the third try. First Asuka Kusano playing in her last game bashed up the side of a ruck to be stopped just short of the try line but flicked the ball to her teammate Hilary who finished the assault that Asuka had started and crossed the line but the ball was declared held up. On the followig five meter set scrum a brilliantly executed back row play saw Erica Smortchevsky pick and go and feed back inside to national player Heather Jaques who walked over the try line to put the Capilanos up 19-0 in as many minutes. Hillary Leith punched one over after the Caps retained possession over twelve phases of the ball 26-3 . The last try of the half was a classic back line play. The Blind side winger Andrea Burk joined the open side backs causing a overlap and a two on one. The last United defender having to cover two attackers gave just too much space and Darcy Patterson from the Caps slid past her inside and in for the try (33-3 Caps at the half). 2nd half You could tell the United squad was put off their game and two of their kick-offs didn't go ten and this cost them even more in the second half. Within seconds of the kick-off for the second half the Caps off the set scrum went to the short side and after a good 40 meter run Henderson put the ball over the line to raise the score 40-3. The Caps at this point had put the boots away and were running everything from everywhere. The blindside seemed to be being used a lot and all three final tries came from there. The last try of the day was all Erica. With the kick-off not going ten the Capilanos took the scrum at centre. Number 8 Erica picked it up and took off the fifty meters for the try down the blind side to finish the Cap scoring at 52. The Capilano coach put in all the subs and soon after the United players marched the ball down to get a try and close the scoreing out at 52-8. Side-notes on the game. It was great to see Erica's son wearing the Capilano jersey and showing us that in the not too distant future the club will have third generation Capilanos take to the field. The whole club wishes Asuka Kusano the best as her knees have told her that will be her swan song and she has played her last game. The Refs did a great job on the day and it is nice to see new refs added to the fold. Division III Final I love to see attitude and in this day of political correctness it is something we don't see enough of. This winner take all type, real chutzpah that a team takes to the field is a treat to watch. Yes this was the final game of the year for third division and yes it was the final game for a couple of players I'm sure but the game started with some attitude and finished with even more. By no means was this classic rugby. It had moments and I think one classic quote which summed up the game was "not a great game but some great drama in the game" The Caps started with arrogance trying to run the ball outside of their own 15 and maybe you can get away with this with one of the lower placed teams but in the BCRU final this type of gamble can come back to bite you in the butt and it did on several occasions as the Caps tried this high risk winner take all attack several times. This was the first year that the BCRU merged the former two third divisions (one team clubs) and multi-club third sides together. The Kats last year won the independent league 3rd division and the Capilanos won the multi-team third side. The game started off all Kats and the Capilanos on the back heel defending the goal line. It didn't help that the Caps tried to run it out of their own 22 and not just got caught but got penalised for not letting go of the ball. The Kats went for the three points but the kick hit the posts and the Caps managed to clear it. The first ten minutes saw 100% of the penalties go against the Capilanos and eventually the Kats got another kick at goal and this one found its mark and the score was 3-0. At that point the Kats turned off their lights and the Caps stormed back , crash after crash, and set scrum after set scrum the Caps attacked and man of the match from the previous week "Whiskey" finally punched a hole across the line and Bowman converted to take the score 7-3 for the Caps. The rest of the first half was all Capilanos. The next try soon after was on a missed clearing kick by the Kats and the Caps countered taking the game to 17-3 and just before the half again the Caps marched the ball 75 meters before Dan Hatch playing at 15 crashed through the back line to put the Caps up 22-3 at the Half. For the Caps that break in play was anything but a welcome break. The whole game was changed and the Kats were in complete control. With the score 22-8 the Cap stand off telegraphed a slow skip pass and the Kat centre stepped in the middle to intercept the pass and took off for a 60 meter solo try and narrowed the gap to 22-13. Soon after the Kats mounted another big attack which was finally stopped at the Cap ten meter line. The Caps were being penalised a lot in this game and the count was 21-9 against the Capilanos at one point in the second half. Hard to win a game when you are being penalised two to one. The Caps last attempt at points was a 45 metre kick at goal that hit the posts but the Kats cleared the ball and with that any attempt at the Caps getting more points. With one minute left on the clock the Capilanos were penalised one more time just to the side of the uprights and ten meters out. The game had a three point spread and with the Kats scoring the last 16 points in a row everyone just assumed they would take the very easy three points and force the game into overtime and win the game in extra time. The Kats talked briefly and chose to do it all or nothing right then and there and instead of going in to extra time, tapped the ball and ran at the line to force the ball over for the clear cut win and win in style. Well like all good plans there is always room for mistakes and the Kats lost the ball in contact and Dan Hatch the Capilano fullback managed to get the ball out of bounds on the Capilano 5 meter line to hear the final whistle inform all the game was over. The game might have been won in extra time had the Kats made the kick and went in to extra time but as one of the props said "he might have missed the kick". The Kats lost but did it with style and with a great All or Nothing approach to the game.
Caps Put Three Teams Through to Finals by Craig Slay posted May 10 2010 Well one could not have asked for a better day for the BCRU semi finals weather wise. Sunshine and 18 and as some were getting in to the spirit of summer the Lomas even helped by bringing the beach to the park. The Capilanos had five of the six Senior club sides make it to the BCRU semi finals and were hoping to pull off one better and have all five in the final but it wasn't to be this year. The only club side not to make it to the final four in the play offs was the second third division side which would have been a real feat. The number of teams that made it to where they were or are speak volumes about the club and hopefully the club will get there next year. The first game of the day was the Ladies second division which were away to the top ranked United team. Although the Caps improved from the last time these two teams met, it wasn't enough and the first place United will follow through to the final week of play. The Capilano Premier Women's team too had what was going to be the toughest game the club was to face taking on undefeated Burnaby at Burnaby. Number one Vs Four on the league table and a repeat of the BC final of last year. I don't know if Burnaby came in thinking the game was theirs or the Cap women put it all together and wanted it just that much more but the day belonged to the Ladies from the North Shore as they handed Burnaby its first loss and now the Cap girls have received a ticket to the show next weekend and as a bonus to them it will be played at home. Many didn't know what the BC executives figured out in regards to the third division play off format but today saw # 2 Capilano Vs # 11 Abbotsford who had only won one game this Spring season. All credit to Abbotsford however as they had two home games with their 1st and 2nd team and sent a third team to Klahanie. It was a nice mix of under 19's and Senior Men but like one could guess with a large gap in the league standings this wasn't go to be much of a contest. Waiski Doughty aka WHISKEY was the player of the day as he ran in three tries and one was worthy of a international test match as the the stand off lofted a high kick to the wing which was pulled in by Whiskey at full pace in the air and he ran over untouched for the late try. Sam Dick who is on loan from Helensvale has been a stand out all year and has helped solidify the front row for the team. Overseas import John Allen from Gibsons is the most dominant centre in the league and hopefully will want to play up next year and challenge himself. Caps walked away with this 76-5 and are one step closer to repeating as BCRU champs as they take on the Kats next weekend at Klahanie. First division saw the first place Capilano side take on the Vancouver Rowing club. They played each other just a few short weeks ago at the end of the league and that game went to the Capilanos 27-10. The Rowers came on the field looking to take a scalp and were fired up. Their sails were pulled down two minutes in to the game as Mark Sandrin stole a intercept ball on the fifty and the caps were up 7-0. The Caps veteran Jeff Chalmers at #9 kept trying to exploit the Rowers blind side and eventually after about 8 phases of play the ball found its way out to the wing Mark Sandrin and he ran in for his second try of the game and the Caps not long in to the game were up 12-0 and this is where the game changed. The Caps for what ever reason took the foot off the Gas and started to take a penalty here and there. Taking advantage of these errors the Rowers started to nickel and dime the Caps. 12-3 then the score was 12-6, then 12-9 and the comeback was starting to take shape and then thank God the half came and the Caps got to regroup and regroup they did. Greg Jones distant relative to Harry, Ben and Charlie came on to the field and with him the intensity came back up and the Caps started to attack once again. Chalmers had to leave the field for a short while with a facial laceration (blood). Kevin Guidi took a couple of kicks of his own. A well deserved try was when the Caps attacked out of their own 15 meter line and freed Levi Broadland who was finally brought down at the Rowers 22. There was a set and the ball was spun back to the hands of Levi who finished running that last 22 meters for the try. Final score was 37 to 9 for the Caps and now they too see a rematch of last years final against James Bay which looks like it will be on the island. The last semi final on the day was at the Meralomas home park although there seemed some doubt if that game would get off. Baseball was being played on the field a hour before kick off and there was no posts up. In fact the field had been left in such a state by Vancouver parks board that the Meralomas pulled in some favours and had local Vancouver Fire Dept come before the game and water the field so they could soften it up and keep the dust down to a minimum. Good effort by the Lomas as the game went on schedule. The Lomas scrum nicknamed "the Butchers" were to live up to their nick name as they were just a bit too big for the Capilano pack to handle on the day. Four minutes in to the game prop Joe Scale bowled over for the first try and not long after Greg Georgas followed suit. This found the Capilano team down by ten not long in to the game and even more before Dave Hillborne struck back with a pair of goals to bring it to 17-6. . The Lomas kicker on the day was off and missed over five makeable kicks and hopefully by next weekend he can turn his game around in that aspect. The Capilanos forwards were having a tough day and thus the back line lead by Tom Larish was having limited attacking opportunities. Tom was great out there and vocal with his troops. In fact I heard some one that knows rugby (not from the Caps) ask if he had been asked if he was in the mix with Canada. Gord Sawer almost struck gold when he snatched the ball off a tackled Loma player and started the attack that covered 70 meters but was eventually snuffed out by a poorly timed penalty against the Caps. At the end of the day it wasn't to be. The Caps top side had a good year and hopefully next year it will be that little bit better. Still with players like Brady Carpenter, Gord Sawer, Dave Hillborne, Christoff Strubin, Akio and others should the Capilanos have a go at this new summer 7's league they may yet get a BC title. With 58 teams in the BCRU leagues that the Capilanos field teams in, for the club or any club for that matter to have more than one team in the Finals is a accomplishment. The Caps this year have three teams in the BCRU finals out of a possible five so Hats off to all the Players, Coaches, executives and fans as together they are doing things right and hopefully next year the BCRU finals will see a Capilano side in each of the five finals. GO Caps GO
CAPILANO MATCH REPORT: CAPS TAKE TWO FROM SHARKS Third Division Playoff Capilano 17 - Bayside 15 CDI Premier League Quarter Final Capilano 47 - Bayside 25 Doing it Right! Although it may not have ended the way Bayside would have liked, they have had a great season! They are one of only three clubs in the Province to have three teams make it to the play-offs. The others being Meralomas and Capilanos. Bayside, like the Capilanos and Meralomas, also used the first half of the schedule as a development tool for its local players, and hopefully this will have residual effects down the road for years to come. Having three teams go to the play-offs shows a club's depth, and it has been a good eight years for Bayside since they have fielded such a deep club. Congratulations go out to them, the Lomas and, of course, the Caps for doing it right and doing it well. Both third teams were very similar in age with a huge push on youth, and both teams loved to play wide open rugby. Perhaps the game was played a bit too fast for some, as mistakes were a plenty on the field. Depends on how one looks at the game as to if it was a good game or not. Either way, the game had some super entertaining moments as well as moments of frustration. There were a few potential stars out there that need just a little more time to hone their decision making skills before we see them with a Premier jersey on. The first try of the day came when Capilano fullback, Dan Hatch, trying to run it out of his own 22 managed to break free of two tackles before he pounded the ball down to the Bayside 22. The Bayside defender tripped and Shane Sanford #13 was there for the Caps to pick the loose ball and go over under the posts for the try. Each team had its chances, with the Caps crossing the line a couple of times only to have the ref declare the ball was held up. Bayside, as well, had a very long try called back for a forward pass. The best try of the day was by big John Allen, who reminds most of Bob Bremner! He was given a slow hand off and bashed through Bayside’s defence to score under the post which would give the Caps the win. The last twenty minutes saw the Caps on the hind foot as Bayside threw everything they had, but everything on this day wasn't enough, and the Capilano’s continue on the road to repeat as Third division champions. With the Capilano Second team having a bye, there was an hour long lull in the action. Soon however the grandstands and beer garden filled up and people were basking in the sun and the warmth of the Spring day. There was a lot of talk by some reports, that this was going to be a great match up as the Bayside back line was going to be a pain in the Capilano backside. These pre-game reports couldn't have been more wrong! It was the Capilano back line, and more specifically, the Cap back three of Gordon Sawyer, Brady Carpenter and Dave Hilborne that stuck it to Bayside. Within the first several minutes of the opening kick off, Brady cut back toward the centre field, hurdled over two fallen players laying on the ground and set the Caps up right on the goal line. Akio Tyler had a great scoring chance, and he too was stopped just short. But thanks to Akio and Rob Scott the ball was secured, recycled and spun out to Andre Prochine who punched it over. The Caps struck again right off the kick-off with Tyler setting Carpenter free again, and the Caps pushed the score up to 12-3. Using very different tactics than the Caps used in the Rowing Club game, the Caps played a much more free and open game that was very much based in letting the backs run with it. Of the seven tries by the Caps, six were to come from the Backs. On several occasions the home team used the big pop kick to their advantage and were often able to recover their own kicks. One of the best moments was when Gord Sawyers got past two Bayside players and popped up the ball. He managed to pull in his own kick at pace and with a huge cut across the field linked up with Akio Tyler who was pulled down from behind just short of the goal. Again Rob Scott, Glen McKinnon and others were there quickly in support and recycled the ball. After five or so short attacks at the goal, Canada Under 20 and Capilano scrum half, Math Yanagiya shot over from a ruck on the goal to make it 19-3 in favour of the home team. Bayside at the restart caught the Caps sleeping, and after numerous hands and attacks saw Brodie Henderson punch one over - 19-10! Brodie's father Wayne who used to play with the Caps was also a Premier level wing. Caps got two more tries before the half and both came from the use of a pop kick. Tom Larisch from near his own 22 popped one up and recovered his own kick before freeing up Carpenter for the try. Christoph Strubin received a fine pass from Craig McLaren to score the last try before the half. HALF TIME SCORE 33-13 The second half saw both clubs take the pedal off the gas a bit. The Caps had to play down as standoff Tom Larisch was sent to the Sin Bin by himself for ten. There was some minor niggling, but nothing ever came of it, and class was shown by both clubs as a one sided play-off game always has potential to explode (Go Canucks go!). Tyler was awarded a penalty try near the end of the match for a dangerous tackle laid on him a few meters from the goal line. Gord Sawyer closed out the scoring when he pinned his ears back and with a classic sprint down the side lines outpaced everyone for a try. The Caps now are the only club left to have three sides still in the play-offs. Next week will see The Premier side travel over to the Loma Dome to take on their cross town rivals to see who will go to the show. Capilano Second Fifteen will meet the VRC and the Capilano Third Team will meet Simon Fraser in their quest to reach the Finals! FINAL SCORE 47 - 25
CAPILANO MATCH REPORT FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 24/2010 by John Langley posted April 25 2010 CDI PREMIER LEAGUE Castaway Wanderers 16 - Capilano 20 CDI FIRST DIVISION Castaway Wanderers 12 - Capilano 28 First Division Report Two squads of Capilano’s left the clubhouse shortly after 7AM to face the long day ahead. Both the CDI First Division side and the Premier squad needed to come away with wins in order to ensure that they would finish the regular season and solidify their relative standings in the league. The First Division game started on time with a few showers and gusty winds. After some kicks back and forth and a missed shot at goal, James Hansen, opened the scoring after several furious attacks by the Capilano forwards. Hansen came to the club part way through the season. He came to Canada to try the skiing and ended up playing rugby for the Caps. He is a quality young player, who unfortunately won’t be around for the playoffs, as he is returning home. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hansen in the Super 12 in the next few years. Kevin Guidi converted the Hansen try for a 7 point Capilano lead. CW scrumhalf Semesa Robarobalevu answered with a try for the home side to cut the lead to two points and get the home side squarely back into the game. Kevin Guidi had a couple of shots at goal but the wind was difficult to read and he missed on each occasion. Craig Yates took a pass and was two on one with the fullback to beat. He looked outside then darted back inside to score the try. Caps converted and took a 14-5 lead into half time. Caps made a break early in the second half that showed promise. Neil Impey found space, but some excellent tackling by the CW backs stopped the rush then turned over the ball. Following a CW scrum, James Hansen picked up a loose ball and picked his way through to score his second try of the game. The conversion put the Caps up to 21. Yates scored again for Caps to give them a commanding 28-5 lead. Some great running by Clayton Thornber gave the home team their second score to bring them to 12 points with the conversion. Thornber ran hard all game and was picked by Caps as their man of the match. CDI Premier Division Report The Capilano players knew that they would be in for a hard game against a team that has lost several close contests to top competition. In addition, it was John Graf’s last home game. CW needed to win this game to make the playoffs. Caps were in the playoffs, but finishing third would have them playing at home, and if they go through, the second game would also be on the Lower Mainland. The wind that blew hard throughout the previous game was beginning to wane and the bright sunshine flooded the pitch. The players appeared to be a bit tentative at the outset, and nerves cost both teams a couple of knock-on’s. Caps did start to establish themselves in the lineouts, and that was to be one of their strong points all day. Castaway Wanderers have a great kicker in Anders Monro, and Caps knew that penalties in their own half would be costly. Monro tried a drop goal early in the game but though well struck it narrowly missed. Akio Tyler made a strong run for Caps, his pass was intercepted. It looked like the home team might score, but Caps recovered to stop the advance. Castaway Wanderers took the lead with a well earned try touched down by Kenny Goodland. The convert was goaled and CW took the lead. One wondered if this was to be Castaway Wanderers day? The Capilano scrum had the ball deep in CW territory, but after mauling the ball and getting close to the line they were called for Tractor Trailer and CW cleared to relieve the pressure. Caps did manage a try though after another maul saw the ball worked over the goal line and touched down by hooker Tim Rhone. Dave Hilborn tried to level the score’ but his kick hit the upright and bounced out. Caps came right back on the attack and a nice backline movement saw the ball go to Andre Prochine who passed to speedy Gord Sawers for the try in the corner. The conversion was missed by the Caps. They now had the lead but CW was fighting hard to get it back’ and a couple of well taken penalty kicks by Anders Monro put them even and then 3 points up. The home crowd was elated and it looked like CW might take this one. John Graf had to leave the game as he was bleeding from his ear. He wasn’t off long, however, and returned wearing a scrum cap. Caps again got the ball in CW territory and managed another mauling try, this time by Craig McLaren. The conversion by Dave Hilborn was put through and Caps led 17-13. Caps took a penalty and CW decided to go for goal. Monro made it a 17-16 game and another shot a goal would have given the Castaway Wanderers the victory they so desperately wanted. CW tried hard to run the ball, and got it to their wing but he lost possession in contact. Caps again got into the CW end and a penalty was called against the home team. Caps made the kick and the score was now 20-16 with little time left on the clock. This was a very tight, even rugby game. Following the game Capilano playing coach Tom Larisch honoured John Graf and thanked him for his great contribution to Canadian rugby. Those of us that have had the pleasure to watch John for all these years would also like to thank him and wish him well in all his future endeavours.
CAPILANO MATCH REPORT, SATURDAY APRIL 17/2010 by Craig Slay posted April 18 2010 CDI PREMIER LEAGUE VANCOUVER ROWING CLUB 7 - CAPILANO 33 CDI FIRST DIVISION VANCOUVER ROWING CLUB 10 - CAPILANO 27 Vancouver Parks Board and the Vancouver Rowing Club have a interesting relationship going on. They have always had a loose relationship, in that the Rowers use Vancouver Parks Board fields but have held a good relationship with the Parks Board. For example, in November they were able to have Brockton open to play on when all other Vancouver fields seemed to be closed due to the rain. As they say though, everything comes with a price, and with the Parks board it comes with a heavy price. Since the Olympics the Parks Board has raised the fee to park in our Stanley Park to $2.50 an hour or $10.00 for the day. Thus the Rowing Club players and those they play are now bringing in a large user tax to the Parks Board for the use of the field and or a beer at their club. None of which technically finds its way back to the Rowing Club itself. The last time these two clubs played each other was the first game of the Fall League. Things were a lot different back then as the Capilano’s used an Under- 23 development side to play as the top team in the Fall, and the Rowers were the first game for them. On the score board that day the Rowers came out on top in the First Division match. The Caps were playing for a different reason, and that was the development of the club’s local players. One might say in that respect it was the Capilano’s that came out on top. Proof of that is that today the Caps were short several players as they were on the Island training with Canada under 20's. Good luck Adam, Liam, Jeff, Matt and Mike. CDI First Division Rowing Club 10 - Capilano 27 The first game today was Number 2 versus Number 5, and by all accounts the Rowing Club has been playing good rugby and have taken some scalps along the way this season. With the play-offs right around the corner, both these club teams are fighting for either a top spot or any spot (number Five in the standings through Nine are with in three points of each other). There seemed to be some anger coming from certain players today, but it could be all that testosterone some had raging in them was to be released at the Rowers Fight Night to be held later that evening. By the time one makes Senior Rugby one should have learned to be careful when one trash talks a player early in the game, and never do it next to the other teams sidelines as more often than not they tend to blow up in your face. This game started off at a huge tempo, back and forth it went all near the centre field for a good five minutes. Then space was found on the blind side of a ruck and the Caps made major ground with it. Shortly thereafter the Cap Forwards punched it over to go up 7-0. The Rowers moved the ball into Cap territory, but lost the ball and winger Levi Brodland took off down the sidelines and eventually kicked the ball deep into space near the Rowers goal line. After a couple of phases the ball found it self back in Levi's hands as he walked across the goal line being totally unmarked 12-0. The pace of this game had not let up to this point and was still played at a high tempo. Soon after the kick off, the Rowing club #10 sliced through the Cap back line and linked up with his support. The Rowers found themselves on the board 12-7 which took the clubs in to the half. Shortly after the half the Rowers got a 35 meter kick at goal to c
