Sevens – Wellington “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble”

from BC Rugby News 7s Correspondent
posted Dec 17 2009

If anyone needs a reminder of what is going to unfold at the New Zealand International Sevens in early February they would do well to jump onto their computer and hit NZ 7’s site – particularly the photos from last year. http://www.nzisevens.co.nz/galleries/2009

In fact the photos from the last several years have been posted on the Kiwi site and it is an excellent log and visual history book of this fantastic event.

And while many are excited about the following weekend in Las Vegas (February 13-14) it would be a mistake to think the city of burlesque and casinos will match the Wellington venue – Kiwis understand rugby, they know rugby and they sure know how to have a party inside the cake-tin stadium known as Westpac.

Many players who have been to Wellington in the past will tell you that it is their favorite stop on the circuit simply because the atmosphere is so electric.

However, Canada’s young team should have a week in Wellington in order to adjust to the atmosphere for Wellington’s biggest party of the year.

Our pool assignment for Wellington is extremely tough.

Samoa is standing fourth overall presently with 26 points. They won every game in Dubai before losing in the Cup Final to New Zealand 24 – 12.

In South Africa they won all their pool games again only to get beaten by Argentina 26 – 19 in the Quarter Finals of the Cup and then stepping out of the competition with a 10 – 7 loss to South Africa in the Plate semi-final.

The Samoans have some prolific scoring on board – Lolo Lui has 74 points after just two tournaments; Mikaele Pasamino has 10 tries and team-mate Alafoti Fa’osiliva has 9 tries so there is no shortage of firepower.

Argentina is no less powerful and has a unique style which most teams struggle against. Presently they are right behind Samoa with 22 overall points (5th place). Nicolas Bruzzone leads all scores for Argentina with 9 tries.

Our last pool contestant is France who has been in dismal form after two tournaments – they won one game in South Africa against Tunisia, and one game in Dubai against Russia by only one point. So if there’s chance to win a game on Day One it must be against France.

Renaud Demas has 35 points for his country and lies 24th in the scoring race.

It is an exciting time for Sevens rugby and after two tournaments things are just getting started – so expect some real fireworks in the New Zealand capitol in early February.

The national team will be posted on BCRN as soon as it has been announced.
