BC 7s Series: Burnaby Lighthouse Win Burnaby Lake Tournament - Updated Standings [ed. comments below, photos by Pamela Smortchevsky] posted August 9 2010 Thanks to Pamela Smortchevsky for sending the results and photos. You can view the updated 7s series standings at the BC Rugby 7s website. Lisa Tam is a summer intern working for the BCRU who is responsible for gathering the scores and I think anyone who has tried collecting scores during the regular season can empathize with her. Rugby people love organizing events and participating in them, recording and communicating the results though is another matter. I believe she is still looking for the complete SFU, Abby and Burnaby results. You can contact her at: Lisa tam ltam@bcrugby.com BURNABY LAKE TOURNAMENT RESULTS (from Pamela Smortchevsky) Capilano defeated Velox in the Women's final. BC 7s Series Officially Announced BCRU Press Release posted May 25 2010 With another BC Rugby club season in the books, it is time to ramp up BC Rugby's 7s program. You may have read the release regarding the creation of the Elite Youth 7s Program, and BC Rugby has another announcement that fans of the 7s game will also be excited to read about. As you may be aware, women's and men's rugby 7s will be added to the Olympics in 2016. BC fans of the seven-a-side game will have seven more sevens series seasons to see before kick-off at the 2016 Olympics, as the British Columbia Rugby Union announces the launch of the BC Rugby 7s Series. The "target athlete audience" is competitive senior men's and women's club teams from British Columbia. British Columbia Club 7s teams who compete in 4 or more of the sanctioned tournaments will accrue points much like the IRB International 7s circuit. The provincial men's and women's champion will be crowned at the completion of the final event. Starting on June 12 the 2010 BC Rugby 7s Series will see club teams collect "7s Series Points" as they vie for the title. The 2010 will include 9 endorsed tournaments as follows: JBAA Buccaneer 7's Sat, June 12 Bullen Park, Esquimalt Vancouver 7s June 25-27 Brockton Oval, Vancouver Can Am 7s Sat, July 10 Bellingham Rugby and Polo Fields, USA SFU Highland Summer 7s Rugby Tournament Sat, July 17 SFU University, Burnaby Abbotsford Rugby 7s Sat, July 24 Rotary Stadium, Abbotsford BLRC Lighthouse 7s Sat, Aug 7 Burnaby Lake Rugby Club, Burnaby Capilano 7s Sat, Aug 14 Klahanie Park, North Vancouver Bayside Summer 7s Rugby Tournament Sat, Aug 28 South Surrey Athletic Park, Surrey Cowichan 7s Sept 4 - 6 Cowichan Rugby Club, Duncan A BC Rugby 7s specific website is being developed, and will include information on all events, including 7s events around British Columbia with a focus on "social" divisions; an excellent way to try the seven-a-side game.
Plan Your Summer Around the BC 7s Series: Nine Tournaments Starting June 12th posted May 19 2010 [ed. comments below] The following are the 7s tournaments on the BC Rugby 7s Series schedule. The series will be run similar to the iRB 7s series where teams accumulate points depending on their results at the tournament. We'll have more details on that at a later date. But it's good to plan now on which tournaments you can attend, many will be a festival atmosphere such as the Abby 7s and the Buccaneer 7s so it will good fun for the family. Each tournament will have its own culture, the Can-Am tournament in Bellingham is not far from the Silver Reef Casino so some may make it a rugby/casino weekend. I know I'm definitely attending the Buccaneer 7s and the Abby 7s and the rest are on a "to be confirmed" basis depending on other commitments, apparently there is life outside of rugby, so I've heard. I should mention there are other 7s tournaments around the province that aren't (apparently) part of the BC Rugby 7s Series such as the Kelowna 7s July 31 - Aug 1, Parkinson Rec Centre, Kelowna. Not sure of the reason at this point but will clarify when I find out. JBAA Buccaneer 7's Sat, June 12 Bullen Park, Esquimalt Vancouver 7s June 25-27 Brockton Oval, Vancouver Can Am 7s Sat, July 10 Bellingham Rugby and Polo Fields, USA SFU Highland Summer 7s Rugby Tournament Sat, July 17 SFU University, Burnaby Abbotsford Rugby 7s Sat, July 24 Rotary Stadium, Abbotsford BLRC Lighthouse 7s Sat, Aug 7 Burnaby Lake Rugby Club, Burnaby Capilano 7s Sat, Aug 14 Klahanie Park, North Vancouver Bayside Summer 7s Rugby Tournament Sat, Aug 28 South Surrey Athletic Park, Surrey Cowichan 7s Sept 4 - 6 Cowichan Rugby Club, Duncan
June - September will be 7s Season in BC: New Summer 7s Series: UPDATED [ed. A reader correctly noted the following which is important information. "The BC series will include both a men's and a women's component. With our Women's 7's team ranked quite high in the world the opportunities abound for Canadian women to start their quest for the Olympics in Rio, Brazil in 2016!"] updated Jan 16 2010 The XVs season hasn’t officially started for 2010 but already plans are being put in place for a Summer 7s series going from June to September. The series will be similar in setup to the iRB 7s series where teams will accumulate points based on each tournament’s results. The 7s circuit is likely to start in Vancouver in mid June where private investors are looking to duplicate the success of the Abbotsford 7s. The series will end in Cowichan in September. In between will be stops in Abbotsford, Chuckanut, Bayside and perhaps SFU. The official press release will likely be released in a couple of weeks and perhaps some other tournament organizers will step forward in the meantime. I’m surprised organizers from Victoria haven’t got involved yet, traditionalists perhaps don’t realize the huge impact 7s will have over the next few years. I also suspect Kelowna will want to get involved in putting on a tournament during this summer window. This summer 7s circuit is perfect for BC and makes full use of their temperate climate, while other areas of Canada are playing their XVs season, BC will be breaking new ground. 7s specialists will be moving west to get noticed in the short game. Clubs with some insight will put forth a 7s presence to encourage players to stick around for the XVs season. It’s another reason for top players to come west and will put a final nail in the coffin of the “unified season” idea for XVs. Summer is and will be 7s season in BC. Check back here over the next couple of weeks for further updates on the BC 7s summer series.
