Pre-season Friendlies: Surrey @ Bayside and United @ Velox posted Jan 27 2010 As the season gets ready to start there are some unlikely matchups as clubs that don't normally get together help each other to get into the rhythm of the upcoming season, There were two such matchups this weekend as Bayside hosted Surrey and Velox hosted United, here are the accounts. Surrey @ Bayside by Chris Veslemes Premier Division-Onion Cup Surrey Beavers 5 Bayside Sharks 59 The Bayside Sharks and Surrey Beavers got re-acquainted with each other on the rugby field for the first time in a number of years, with a preseason game where they would vie for the Onion Cup. The Onion cup is a long-standing trophy between the two clubs, and is named after Paul Iannone who had played for both clubs and passed away. The two clubs top teams had not met each other since the forming of the Premier League and the two teams had taken different paths. But now the two teams have vowed to make this a yearly fixture. Both teams were surprised to be greeted by unseasonably warm weather, a field in perfect condition, and a very large crowd, all things you don’t expect for a rugby game in January. Both teams started off a bit slow, as this is the first time they have played since fall. Bayside opened the scoring in the 5th minute, after a lineout 10 meters from the Surrey goal line, a nice throw then a nice drive over the line, ended up with prop Taylor Stogryn scoring, Eric Sugawara hit the conversion, 7-0 for Bayside In the 14th minute, Bayside kept attacking deep in the surrey territory, and some great work from the bigger more experienced Sharks pack, allowed Hooker Levi Hansen taking a great angle off a nice pass, to score, Sugawara converted 14-0 for Bayside. Bayside kept the pressure on, and from a scrum 5 meters from the Surrey goal line, Bayside #8 Cass Conkin picked the ball, pulled the defence wide and put a perfect inside ball to flanker Matt Miles to score, Sugawara missed the conversion, 19-0 for Bayside, just 23 minutes into the game. Surrey began to get their legs under them better and started competing and defending, both teams taking their turns on offence and defence, when the halftime whistle sounded, the score was 19-0 for Bayside. 4 minutes into the second half, the ball ended up in the hands of Bayside center Isimeli Sigarua, who sprinted between the posts, Sugawara converted. 26-0 for Bayside. 5 minutes later, Sigarua added another try, after some long runs from prop Shawn Pittman and winger Zach Thorpe, the ball ended up in Sigarua’s hands who finished the movement, Sugawara converted, 33-0 for Bayside. Bayside continued the scoring in the second half with tries from fullback Corey Wood at 43rd minute, converted by Sugawara. Surrey scored their only points of the game in the 55th minute, after some good pressure from their forwards, conversion was missed. 60th minute with a try by Zach Thorpe, converted by Sugawara, 75th minute, another try by Zach Thorpe, Sugawara missed the conversion, and the final try of the day from Bayside was a try in the final minute by replacement fullback Murray Brookes, which was converted by Sugawara. Final score 59-5 for Bayside. It was a great day for Bayside, ideal to get the rust, and turkey out of the system after a 2 month layoff. Bayside now has 2 weeks to prepare for the beginning of the CDI Premier League, with a trip over to take on the UVIC Vikes. In the second half, Bayside began finding gaps in the Surrey defence, and scored a number of tries. Player of the Game: Trevor Giesbrecht Second Division-Onion Cup Surrey Beavers 5 Bayside Sharks 14 10th min Bayside Try(Dan Dixon) Converted, Dixon 7-0 Halftime 7-0 for Bayside 50th min Bayside Try(Charles Riby-Williams)Converted, Dixon 14-0 80th Min Surrey Try Missed 14-5 This was obviously the closest game of the day, with Surrey putting the Sharks under pressure for much of the game. Bayside’s defence holding with only a penalty try at the final whistle being the only time they crossed the line. Player of the Game: Tom Corley-Smith United @ Velox by Dave Birchmore [ed. I would be amiss if I didn't mention one of our sponsors, Mike Holmes (Pemberton Holmes Real Estate), played for 20 minutes for Velox in the match. Mike in his 40s wanted to experience the thrill of top level rugby again, perhaps getting ready for the Canadian Classics game this summer in Calgary. So now it's in print you played alongside a 23 year old Super 14 player and can show this to your son in case he ever doubts you.] This was the first time my club had ever played Velox and the first time the club had ever come to the island to play a friendly. Our club is coming upon our 5 year anniversary this Fall since merging with Douglas and Pocomo. The club has been working very hard in our community and working in the schools to develop rugby, which is just starting to pay off. This was a big step for us to come over to the island and play some of the best players in the Premier league and “Super 14” Velox’s new Auckland Blues player. Our little club which has aspirations to one day participate in the Premier league really enjoyed the opportunity to play a first class Rugby Club. Some of our players have never even played on the Island or even against National players or even Premier players. I was very lucky to have the opportunity myself when I played for Burnaby Lake Premier. I have always appreciated the Velox Rugby Club with their excellent Facility and hosting and wanted my players to experience what Island Rugby is all about. The club has now forged a new friendship and looks forward to a yearly match against Velox. Thanks again to Velox Rugby Club for being great ambassadors of the sport. The final score of the day was 39 to 12 for Velox.
