BC Rugby Announces Provincial Head Coach Appointments & Team Program Dates BCRU Press Release posted April 23 2010 The British Columbia Rugby Union is proud to announce the head coaches of the Provincial Senior Women’s and Age Grade Provincial teams. The volunteer individuals below have been identified as top coaching leaders in British Columbia and will be entrusted to set the vision and mission for the on-field activity of their respective BC teams at the 2010 and 2011 National Championships and National Festivals. Senior Women The flag-ship women’s program, the BC Senior Women, will compete in the National Women’s League (NWL). The NWL will have a condensed season in 2010 as it is a Women’s World Cup year as our National Women will take on the world in England this August. BC will take on Alberta on Thursday, July 1 in Toronto. The winner of that fixture will face the winner of Ontario and Quebec in the NWL Final on Sunday, July 4 in Toronto. Senior Women – Jason Young, Head Coach Jason has worked extensively with Regional athletes in the Fraser Valley for almost a decade. He has previously been involved with BC Men’s Programs at the U20 Level and from 2007 he coached the BC U19 Women’s team to a bronze and two silver medals at the National Championships. In 2009 and 2010, Jason worked as a Mentor Coach with the Rugby Canada U20 Program at the Nation’s Cup in England as well as development tours in Florida and San Diego. He also coached the BC Women’s President’s XV to a win over Japan in the summer of 2009. National Championship Festival The annual National Championship Festival will take place at the Calgary Rugby Park from August 13-17. The British Columbia Rugby Union will feature teams in all three age grade divisions, including two teams in the Under 16 Men’s category. The decision was made in consultation with Sport Canada’s “Long Term Athlete Development” (LTAD) program and specifically the “Train to Train” phase of athlete development. It was also determined that there was an abundance of capacity to engage an additional 25 promising young provincial athletes. In Calgary, the Under 18 Men will look to avenge a loss at in the Canada Summer Games final last August. Similarly, the Under 19 Women will be at the National Festival looking to upgrade to gold this campaign after an exciting final versus Ontario last year. Under 19 Women – Stephanie Murphy, Head Coach: Stephanie has been involved with the Women’s game at both the School and Club level with Port Moody HS and United RFC respectively. At the representative level, she has worked with the Vancouver Rugby Union (VRU) Under 19 Women’s program at the Provincial Regional Championships (PRCs) and has been the Assistant Coach for the Under 19 Women in 2008 and 2009. Under 18 Men “BC Junior Bears” – John MacMillan, Head Coach: John comes to the Under 18 Men’s Program with an outstanding coaching background. He worked as an Assistant and Head Coach with the Pacific Pride program and was part of the Canada coaching team at the 2003 World Cup in Australia. Most recently he has worked as the Regional Coach for Victoria and has a thorough knowledge of the Under 18 program at both the Vancouver Island Rugby Union (VIRU) and Provincial levels having coached the Under 18 Tide for 3 years and having been involved in the BC National Academy program. U16 Men “BC Cubs” – Stephen Rowell, Head Coach: Stephen has a lengthy coaching career, working at the High School Level with Robert Bateman School in Abbotsford as well as with youth initiatives with Langley Rugby Club. He has coached the Under 18 Men’s team to National Championship and Canada Summer Games gold medals. For the past two seasons he has worked specifically with the BC Under 16 Men, winning consecutive National Championships in Ottawa and Toronto. U16 Men “BC Bruins” – Jeff Williams, Head Coach: Jeff has had a successful playing career with both the Canada Sevens team and the National Senior Men’s program, in addition to serving in a leadership role at James Bay Athletic Association. He is currently coaching at Shawnigan Lake School and is a welcome addition to the British Columbia Under 16 Men’s program. The National Championship in Calgary will not feature an Under 17 Women’s Division. Only two other provinces in addition to British Columbia were able to commit to the tournament at the Under 17 level, and BC Rugby has a policy stating that teams sent to National Championships must have a minim of four teams. However, there will be an Under 17 Women’s program this summer and it is expected a top flight tour-out will be announced soon for this program. Under 17 Women – Brad Baker, Head Coach: Brad returns as coach for the Under 17 Women’s program. He has directed the hugely successful High School Girls program at Carson Graham and has coached the Under 17 Women’s Team to two bronze, one silver and a gold medal at the National Championships. Brad is also working as Mentor Coach with Rugby Canada. In keeping with the decision to add an additional Under 16 provincial program, the same will be done at the Under 14 Boys division. The Under 14 Boys compete in a National Festival against other provinces with goals and objectives of the competition in-line with the LTAD program. The Under 14 Boys teams will head to Calgary from August 11-15. U14 Men “BC Growl” – Martin Jones, Head Coach: Martin has been involved in coaching at Mulgrave School in West Vancouver and has also contributed to the Britannia Lions program. This will be Martin’s fourth year with the U14 Boys and he has played a key role in identifying and developing players that are now involved at the U16 through to the U18 levels. U14 Men “BC Roar” – Mike Styles, Head Coach: Mike has also worked in the U14 Boys’ program since its inception in 2007. He has taught at Mulgrave School and is now involved with St George’s School. Mike will be coaching one of the two teams that BC will send to the Provincial Festival in Calgary in August 2010. Provincial Regional Championships In addition to the BC Rugby Age Grade club leagues and girls and boys high school fixtures, the most important selection vehicle for the age grade provincial teams is the Provincial Regional Championships. The tournament will take place again this year at the University of British Columbia from July 2-4 and feature regional and sub union teams from across BC in the Under 16, Under 18 and Under 19 categories. The Under 14 Boys and Under 17 Women will compete regionally in the 2010 BC Summer Games in Langley from July 22 to 25. The June to September window will also serve as the Senior Men’s BC Bears season. More details regarding the Bears will be released soon.

Gerald McGavin has recently retired as Chair of British Pacific Properties and this new award will recognize coaches in the Province of British Columbia who go above and beyond their role as coaches. Gerald was a very talented rugby player and he acknowledges that many of his coaches were a very positive influence on him as he grew up. He started playing rugby at Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island and later went on to represent the Province of British Columbia against teams like: the Barbarians, Australia, Eastern Canada, the British Lions, and New Zealand Universities. He would also earn a selection to represent Canada on a tour of Britain. Unfortunately, Gerald would have to decline the selection due to the time commitment of being away with the team for three straight months. Outside of rugby, Gerald has been a leader in the business, professional and cultural community of Vancouver and the Province of B.C. for almost 5 decades, serving as a Director of a number of for profit and not for profit organizations. Gerald and Sheahan McGavin have been very generous philanthropists, supporting the arts as well as many other cultural and health related campaigns. Gerald was awarded an F.C.A. in 1990 in recognition of the service and honour he brought to the accounting profession. In October of 1999, Gerald was recognized for his outstanding commitment to his community and was appointed to become a Member of the Order of Canada.
