VV Win Island 3rds; Prems and Div 1 Plan for Next Season by Aaron Frisby posted April 28 2010 Thirds The Velox Valhallians won the Island Thirds championship Sunday, defeating the Castaway Wanderers 23-12 at Oak Bay High. The win secures Velox the first place seed in the BCRU provincial playoffs, starting next Saturday, May 1st at home. Velox and Oak Bay have battled in three games this half, Oak Bay the winners in the opening two, Velox triumphing today with the hardware. Velox jumped out to an early 17-0 lead through three tries, two by Jamie Dark, one through Garret Posehn. Oak Bay battled hard to close the score through a try and a halftime Velox lead 17-5. The second half saw Velox net two penalties through Kenny to a converted try by Oak Bay. The whole game was marked by intensity in the tackle, the rucks and set piece. Both clubs should be proud of their fine efforts and displaying some high quality third division play. Kudos for Velox include captain Todd Cunningham who tackled like a demon and controlled the play throughout the game well. Coach Paul Eby also had an influential game from the second row position. All in all, fine efforts by all Velox players on the day. A great thanks to the supporters who cheered the thirds onto victory. Next weekend, the BC playoffs at home vs Abbotsford at 12pm. Valkryies The women finished off their season with a very impressive win over Cowichan 33-0. Congratulations to Bill, Sharron and the women for a great season. Beavers A very heavy looking Beavers squad took the field against the Rowers. It was 10-10 for about 70 minutes of the game before Rowers notched two quick tries to secure a playoff spot. Thanks to the trainers and Tugboat for their efforts this season and hopefully the Div 1 side will continue to build on some great development achieved this year, next season. Premier An attacking masterpiece would grace the field of Velox on Saturday. 92 points would be scored in the game, both sides scoring some impressive tries. The Rowers would battle back from a 20 point deficit in the first half to win 47-45. Fight Night and Back in the Black Day Thank you to everyone who was involved in and attended the biggest day the club has seen in sometime. Over $13000 was raised on the day, making the clubs bank balance a little healthier going into the summer. A big thank you to all the fighters for a great performance. DVDs of the night are now on sale for $20. If you want one please email frisbyaaron@hotmail.com.
Velox Split with Cowichan: 3rds in Island Final by Aaron Frisby posted April 20 2010 Valkryies The women had a bye this weekend and spent their time putting on the most memorable prize giving banquet in the clubs history. Thank you to the women for your effort on this event. Beavers Leading 17-0 at one point in their game against Cowichan, the Beavers were looking in good late season form on Saturday. Unfortunately the cruise control was hit too early by VV and after two yellow cards and a great second 40 from the Piggies, Velox would fall 24-17. Player of the day was captain Cobus DeKlerk. Premier Reeling after an embarrassing loss to the Ravens last weekend, the Valhallians were looking to make a statement against a pumped up Cowichan side. Velox came out firing scoring their first try in less than two minutes and their second in less than ten. The flood gates looked like they were about to open but the piggies had a bit too much pride to let that happen. A close battle would follow with Cowichan taking a 1 point lead shortly after half time. As always in tight games, tempers flared and a yellow card for each team would be awarded. Its a well known fact the Cowichan sideline is a gong show but they may want to work on crowd control a little as one of their managers stormed the pitch to become involved in the altercation. From my understanding it's not the first time this member has charged onto the field and no one wants to see a spectator get injured. After a 20 minute period of sustained pressure from Velox, Cowichan's defense would slowly start to crack and Velox would pull away with the game. Velox 35 -Cowichan 19. Velox would like to wish Cowichan all the luck in the world going into this weekend's round of games, as they attempt to make the top 9 for next years proposed premier league. 5 island teams and 4 mainland teams sounds pretty good to us. 3rd Division Velox would notch a 24-12 win over Cowichan to book a place in the VIRU 3rd division final this weekend against CW. Well done guys and best of luck. The Biggest Velox Event of the Year This weekend the men will host the Vancouver Rowing Club. The final game of the season for our Prems and Beavers. As everyone knows the club has had some financial difficulties this year and this Saturday we hope to be out of the hole and 'Back in the Black'. So this Saturday will be a 'Back in the Black' day at Velox. Put some black clothing on and come support your club. If you haven't visited the club in a while, be sure to drop in for a pint or two. If rugby wasn't enough the 2nd Annual Velox fight night will follow, with doors opening at 7pm. There are a few tickets left so see Barney at practice on Tuesday and Thursday to buy some. The fight are listed below. David vs Goliath match- Joe 'The Pom Bomber" Shelton vs Chris 'The Righteous One' Rickinson Ginger vs Ginger match- Toby 'Cold as Ice' Berg vs Andrew 'A Little Loco' Owen Revenge match -Cam 'Good Night' Neish vs Galen "The Punching King" Potash Kooyman Langford grudge match - Lenny "The Lover" Steen vs Lee "The Hitman" Hart I'm a lover not a fighter match - Phil "The Future" Erb vs Brad 'The Bruiser' Huber "Girls can throw too" match - Nancy 'The Nightmare' Schmidt vs Merrisa 'Fearless' Pearson BFF Bash match - Kelsey "KO" Oetting vs Lindsay "Lights Out" Bayliss Just for shits and giggles match - Hannah "Pow" Yow vs Briana "Bang Bang" Michalski Half time show will be a pro wrestling match between 'The Canadian Bomber' Nelson Creed vs 'Rocket' Randy Tyler Dont miss this event!
Velox Teams 1-3 in Weekend Action by Aaron Frisby posted April 13 2010 Valkyries The women would bring the only success to the club on the weekend, beating Bayside 23-3. The girls have been the most dedicated team in the club of late and its really starting to pay dividends. They also held a successful car wash on the weekend to raise money for this weekend's banquet. Get your tickets ASAP. Beavers It was a nightmare of a day for the Div 1 team, on the field and slightly before taking the field. The day started with a concussion to one player in the warm up and this set the standard for the day. Five starting players would be injuried in the first half but the bench would shine through at the end, with Velox scoring the last try of the match. Luke Baker was the stand out player for the Mighty Beavers, breaking the line with ease and showing he has a very bright future in rugby. Kevin Sommerfeldt also had a strong game, organising the troops very well with good skill and communication. Kieran Dunford was the standout defender of the game, taking down guys twice the size of him with no difficulty. Another to watch for in the future. Premier The first 40 was a close affair with both teams feeling each other out and Dan White using some great tactical kicking to keep the Ravens under constant pressure. Galen Potash-Kooyman would be the only VV player to cross the line, with a fantastic solo try, taking it blind by himself against 3 defenders and some how dotting the ball down. Half time Velox 8 - Ravens 3. I'm not sure what was in the Ravens water at half time but they came out firing on all cylinders. Phase after phase of tight play would starve the Valhallians of any possesion and Velox did not have an answer for this. Josh Schlebach and Dean Budd tried hard to steal any ball they could but a well drilled Ravens team and a strict whistle blower made this almost impossible. Final 28-8 Schlebach and PK would be named Velox players of the day. 3rd Div A fantastic game of rugby would be played at Velox on Sunday as the 3rds hosted CW. 3rds, 1st, Prems and even one international player would take the pitch for a good spirited game. The final would be 12-10 to CW with both teams likely to meet in 2 weeks time for the VIRU 3rd div final. Velox Fight Night After selling over 100 tickets on Sunday, this year's fight night is going to sell out fast. Barney will be selling tickets on Tuesday and Thursday this week at practice. $20 will get you a ticket to Velox's biggest and most entertaining night of the year.
Velox Match Reports: Budd Lights up Prems in Close Loss to Vikes by Aaron Frisby posted March 30 2010 Valkryies A tough loss for the ladies on Saturday to the Meralomas. A back and forth battle ended in a 24-15 loss for Velox, taking the girls out of playoff contention for this season. The girls have trained very hard and turned things around from last years struggles, with good numbers out and under the guidance of dedicated new coach Bill Meechan, they will be looking to close the season out on a high with a few more wins in the coming weeks. Not to make excuses for the ladies but the Womens schedule this season really didn't help island teams performances. With five rounds against island teams before they kicked into a BC wide competition, the Valkyries struggled to find quality opposition on the island. While the Valkryies were winning games by 90 points, the mainland teams had the advantage of playing against quality opponents in close competitive games. So needless to say the VV girls got a bit of a wake up call when they played their first game against a mainland team. Maybe something for the BCRU schedulers to have a look at for next season. Beavers The mighty beavers did very well against a strong UVic side who only have one loss this season. The lead of the game changed at least 4 times with UVic and Velox both taking turns at scoring during the game. VV dominated most of the first half, keeping the ball in tight, doing a lot of grunt work to score some nice tries. Mike Collins would dot down twice against his old team mates, in a player of the day performance. The Velox front row of Phil Erb, Toby Berg and Cam Neish played a big roll in the teams first half success, out muscling their opponents in every facet of the game. The second half would see Velox lose a bit of spring to their step and UVic would coming screaming back into the game with some good positional kicking, backed by a great chase. Rookie winger Graham Young would bring the only success for VV in the second half, doing well to stay in bounds to score on the corner flag, getting up covered head to toe in white paint. Final UVic 25- Velox 17 Premier Velox again were on the wrong end of a tightly contested match. UVic came out of the gates firing and captain Dave Spicer was first to open the scoring, running a nice line and scoring close to the posts. This was enough to wake the Valhallians who put on a show for the crowd, scoring three nice tries in a short amount of time. Dustin MacPherson sprinted 30 metres, outpacing not only props but a number of speedy Uvic backs to score in between the posts. Off the following kick off, Dean Budd would catch the ball and made things look easy as he ran through the entire UVic side to score in the left corner. But Budd wasn't finished just yet as Velox would grind their way into UVic territory again and Budd would use his trade mark 5 metre stretch to dot down in the same corner. Velox 19-UVic 7. Things went downhill for VV from there. A bunch of penalties and finally a yellow card would be their undoing. UVic changed up their game plan and Spicer guided the students in a great display of 10 man rugby. Two UVic tries and a penalty later, Velox would be trailing 21-19 and would be unable to mount a comeback. Pita Savea had a great game at fullback, doing his best impersonation of Jonah Lomu when returning positional kicks. Galen Potash-Kooyman also stood out on the day, making some nice runs and is gaining confidence in premier rugby every week he plays. Dean Budd was the stand out performance on the day, making things look way too easy. 3rd Division The Threevers notched another win on Sunday, beating the Comox Kickers 27-10.
Velox Women Defeat Caps; Men Lose to James Bay posted March 15 2010 by Aaron Frisby Valkyries The women recorded a good win against an always strong Capilano. The Velox girls adapted to the pace of premier rugby a bit better than their opposition on the day and came away with a 17-12 win. Try scorers were Barbara Mervin, Shannon Kane and Chandra Brun and one conversion to Amanda Campbell. Beavers The men travelled down to MacDonald Hillside to take on the blue crush. The first half went well for the Beavers, spending most of the time in JBAAs 22 hot on attack. Unfortunately they couldn't cross the line and were trailing 8-0 against last seasons champions. Roll on the second half and what a completely different story. The VV defense started to crack, the referee started turning a blind eye towards foul play as Rob Robson took the field. Robson threw a total of 11 punches on the day and all the referee said was "sorry, didn't see it". The JBAA supporters were well entertained. JBAA 35- Velox 0. Premiers Not a great day for a struggling Premier squad with a growing injury reserve list. A lot of missed tackles, a lot of penalties against and a quicksand feeling as the game went on. JBAA 52 - Velox 6 Derek Pue had a standout performance, cementing a spot in the premier XV for many games to come. Oli Scott also played well at fullback, mounting some of the only exciting attack from the Valhallians on the day. 3rd Division The 3rds keep on rolling as they dispatched easily of a UBC Law side in exhibition play. Trevor Cunningham made a great impact on the day, dotting down numerous times. Jamie Dark would also pitch in on the try scoring. This Weekend On Saturday the men and women travel to Burnaby Lake for an away triple header. The 3rds will be taking on the Castaway Wanderers at Windsor park on Sunday.
Velox Weekend Match Reports: Disappointing Home Stand at Gordon Head by Aaron Frisby posted March 11 2010 Not the best day at the office for Velox on Saturday. Valkryies The women opened the day up against a strong opponent in United RFC. The Valkyries managed a few spurts off excellence but struggled with United's potent backline attack. Final score United 28 - Velox 10. Beavers The Beavers didn't have much more luck than the women on the day, getting off to a slow start against Capilano and finding themselves 28-10 down at the break. The boys showed some great spirit in the final twenty minutes of the game and managed to score 5 tries to gain a bonus point against the top team in the league. Capilano 47 - Velox 29 Phil Erb scored a nice try stemming from a number of pick and goes. Captain Cobus De Klerk dotted down late in the second half, running a nice line to cross untouched. Kieran Dunford and Dylan Pretty had strong games in the centres, always keeping the defence honest. Premiers Its awfully hard to win a game of rugby when you don't get to touch the ball. Capilano did a great job of stringing phases together and starving the Valhallians of any ball in the premier mens game. There was a lot of aerial ping pong in the first half and Capilano came out of the half with a 18-0 lead. VV did mount a comeback late in the second half, running multiple phases before being stopped short by the final whistle. Capilano 18 - Velox 12. 3rd div The only success of the weekend would come from the 3rds, making the long trip to Powell River worth it, winning comfortably 47-0. Good times were had by all on the bus ride home. This Weekend Five Velox teams will be in action this Saturday. The women will be fielding two team, the first in Division 2 action against Port Alberni, 10am kickoff at Velox. The premier women will then be hosting Capilano at 11.30am. The 3rds are also at home on Saturday, in an exhibition match against UBC Law, 1pm kickoff. The Prems and the Beavers are away at Macdonald park to face JBAA.
Velox Lose Two Close Ones to Sharks: Face Caps at Home Next Weekend by Aaron Frisby posted March 1 2010 Valkryies The ladies travelled to Comox on the weekend and came away with a good win. A couple of the Velox girls pulled on the Kickettes jersey to make up numbers and a lot of young girls had strong games. Beavers After a long crowded ferry ride and not being able to get changed until 20 minutes before the game, the Beavers got off to a slow start in their game against Bayside. In the first half Velox were against the wind and found themselves down 20-6 at half time. The boys come out firing on all cylinders in the second half, scoring two great tries. Toby Berg scored a nice try from a trick play on a lineout and Steve Frederick dotted down after some great forward phases. Hot on attack, with the score, VV 20-Bayside 27, the Beavers were looking sure to tie the game up. Unfortunately a loose ball was hacked over the VV goal-line and a mistimed dive, seen a untouched ball left wide open for a Bayside player to take the game out of reach. Final VV 20 - Bayside 32 Toby Berg had a strong performance, holding up a 350lb monster on his side of the scrum. Sixteen year old Tua Va'a also played well in his first Beavers start from the side of the scrum. Premier The Premier team also got off to a slow start in their contest, finding themselves down 20-8 at the half. Dean Budd created the only highlight for VV in the half, with a nice solo try, showing some good toe to outpace his opposition 40m to the try line. Josh Schlebech (Sunshine) lost his 'hard man' tag, when he turned up to the game with a single braid in his hair. Ironically it would be his partner in crime Dean Budd (Moonshine) who would go to the sin-bin for defending that very braid. Once again the boys came out of the half time break a different team, mounting a strong come back. Captian Dean Van Camp crossed the line after exploiting an overlap. This would be followed by a nice try by srumhalf John Ogilvy, who did really well to stay out of touch as he crossed the line. But the story of the day was Velox's inability to stop the strong running Bayside centre Brodie Henderson. He seemed to break the VV defensive line at ease and made a lot of yards on the day. Final score Velox 23 - Bayside 25 Scott Harnden and Rob Down continued their fine form in recent weeks. Oli Scott played well in his second game at flyhalf for the premier side, kicking well for touch and almost winning the game from an attempted intercept. This Weekend Another triple header at the club this Saturday with the women kicking off the day in their first competition game against United RFC. The men will be facing the always strong Capilano RFC. The 3rds are traveling to Powell River on Sunday. Velox Beerfest this Saturday Night. There will an epic drinking competition held at Velox on Saturday the 6th. Games will include: Boat Races / Flip Cup Upside Down Chug Speed Quarters BEER PONG Das Boot Race (for championship round) Drinko Plinko and much much more!! There is a 5 dollar cover to help raise money for the club and Pitchers of beer will be a CHEAP 11$, U can't beat that price anywhere else! Teams can be entered into the competition on arrival with a minimum of 5 people per team with at least 2 female teammates as well. Sleemans Beer will be sponsoring the event so there will be loads of cool prizes. Teams are encouraged to dress alike (remember it's a beer festival) or support their nationality.
Velox Make It Three Wins On The Day by Aaron Frisby posted Feb 22 2010 Velox made it three wins on the day, hosting a triple header in perfect conditions. Valkyries A youthful womens team continued their impressive form, dispatching of Cowichan 22-7. 16 year old Paige Taylor opened the scoring for the women, with Jess Dovanne and Mardi Blow also dotting down. Krista Deane continued her tryscoring form, crossing the line once to make it 6 tries in 3 weeks. Unfortunately for Velox this was Krista's last game for this season as she travels to the land of the "Long White Cloud" for an overseas experience. The women are building up nicely to their first competition game on March 6th against the always strong United RFC from Vancouver. Beavers It was a day of firsts for the Beavers on Saturday, when they notched their first win of the season against UBC 14-12. There were no dropped balls over the line, some nice tries scored and a great debut for 17 year old Matt Kemp at flyhalf. Kemp opened the Velox tally with a nice individual run, sprinting and stepping his was 40 metres to the try line. Kevin Sommerfeldt, in an unfamilar postition of left wing, did the same not long after, receiving the ball from a playmaking Johnny Lyall in space, high stepping 50 metres to dot down between the posts. UBC did have a bit of fight left in them however, scoring twice in the second half. The second was on the final whistle, with the UBC flyhalf unable to convert the try and tie it up. Stand out performances came from Steve Frederick, who found his tackle breaking form once again and captain Cobus DeKlerk also had a good game from fullback. Premier A banged up Velox squad took the field against the students, taking the 'W' from the youngsters 36-22. It wasn't a great performance by any means from the Valhallians but a great 30 minute period of rugby was enough to get them home. Dean Budd was the assist master of the game, also dotting down himself in trademark fashion, being brought down 5 metres before the line, only to stretch out to score the 5 points. James Buchanan opened the scoring on the day, cashing in off a nice #8 play from Budd. Galen Potash-Kooymen would be the next to cross the line, getting a great pass from Budd to put him around a defendent, with another 2 defendents unable to catch the 150lbs of fast twitch fibres, on his way to his first Premier try. Dustin MacPherson continued his tryscoring form, having just enough gas to cross the line with a surprisling fast prop in chase. Captain Dean Van Camp would be the last to cross the line, with a nicely created overlap allowing him to cross unchallenged. Although coach Greg Clague wasn't too pleased with the teams performance, I'm sure he'll be happy to get 5 points out of the game, while carrying a lot of injuries in his squad. Credit is due to UBC students who never gave up and scored some very entertaining tries throughout the game. Top performances for VV came from Scott Harden and also Rob Down, who seems to be thriving in his new environment. This Weekend The men are away to the mainland to face Bayside and the women will be are travelling to Comox to face the Kickettes. The 3rds will be looking to avenge their 24-19 loss of two weeks prior, when they host Cowichan on Sunday.
Velox Notch Win in Prems 22-19 Over CW This game report is sponsored by:Pemberton Holmes Vancouver Islands First and Largest Real Estate Company 1 800 665 5303 www.pembertonholmes.com by Aaron Frisby posted Feb 15 2010 Valkyries The ladies produced another strong performance on Saturday with a 60-0 romp over the Nanaimo Hurricanes. Krista Deane scored a hat-trick on the day, in what was discribed as a great team performance. Numbers at training have been the largest the ladies have seen in years and there is the possiblitly of a Velox fielding a Div 2 womens team in an exhibition match in the coming weeks. Keep up the good work ladies. Beavers Week one, one try dropped over the line. Week two, two tries dropped over the line. I hope this isn't a trend we are seeing for our Div 1 team. Once again the boys put up a good performance, with great option taking and strong line breaks. The beavers managed to play most of the game in their oppositions half but just didn't have the fire power to cross the white line. Final score CW 28-Velox 0. Luke Baker had a great game from the side of the scrum and is improving in leaps and bounds every week. Derek Pue showed he is a class act at #8, the type of performance that might grab the Premier coaches interests. Oli Scott was his usual line-breaking self and is proving to be quite the crowd favourite no matter where he plays. His current appearance has earned him the nickname 'jesus' between fans. A couple of returning faces took the field for the Beavers. Andrew Owens made some good runs in the mid-field and Chris Rickinson came on to stabilze the scrums. Every good team needs an angry ginger and a giant in their ranks. Prems After such a stressful game against the Lomas last week, the premier coaches and four starting players took a well earned holiday in Las Vegas over the weekend. This really tested the clubs depth and if Saturday's game is anything to go by, Velox is a very strong club. Velox didn't get off to the best start against CW, losing Clay Panga to a serious arm injury around the 10 minute mark. This would bring Oli Scott to the field after playing a full 80 minutes with the B's. Velox opened the scoring with a Dustin MacPherson unconverted try. A great team try, coming after a number of phases. Ander Monro, CW flyhalf, then took control of the rest of the half, kicking well with the wind behind his back, keeping Velox pinned in its 22. Monro would add 11 points to the scoreboard in the half through some fantastic goal kicking and a cheeky dropgoal. Conor Wade crossed the line for CW after Nanyak Dala created an overlap, bringing the half time score to CW 16 - VV 5. Not to be out done by the Canadian flyhalf, Dan White would almost mirror Monro's first half performance in the second half. The difference was an intercept. White kicked well for position and before long, snapped a nicely timed dropgoal. Shortly after, White would intercept a Monro pass and jog untouched to the tryline. Score CW 16 - VV 15. Dean Budd would put the Valhallians ahead with a great try, converted by Savea. This would make for an interesting finish. CW had alot of chances to take the game, especially with a running time of 54 minutes on the second half, but the Velox defence would only give up an additional 3 points. Final VV 22 - CW 19. Galen Potash-Kooymen had a solid debut for the prems. It was a shame his trick play with Oli Scott resulted in a yellow card but all in all he has proved himself ready for the step up. Mike Collins also turned some heads, making a great impact off the bench. Justin Thomas also played out of his skin, really putting his stamp on one of the flanking jerseys. Next Weekend Velox will be host to another triple header this weekend. The Boys will be hosting the Thunderbirds from UBC and the Valkyries will be facing Cowichan. The 3rds have a bye this coming weekend and will host a 'Halfway to Summer' party on Saturday night. Dress in your best beach outfit or maybe enter the 'build your own bikini' competition. The biggest twist to this party will be... two hot tubs operating in the den. New Bar Manager Velox would like to welcome Toby Berg on as bar manager. After what seems to have been a revolving door in the bar manager position, it is great to see a club guy stepping up into such an important position. Club biggest ever 50-50 draw Velox will be selling 50-50 tickets on Saturday with a twist. This twist will ensure a massive end pot, so buy your tickets and come have a beer with us in the clubhouse afterwards for results.
Velox Match Reports: Valkyries Dominate UVic; Beavers and Prems Lose to Lomas Game write up sponsored by:Parker Johnston Ltd For all your roofing, cladding, wall systems and scaffold needs. 250-382-9181 www.parkerjohnston.com by Aaron Frisby posted Feb 7 2010 Velox kicked off its spring season opener with a triple header at home. Valkryies The Valkyries opened the day with a convincing win over UVic, 55-22. Velox have added a number of players from the national program and also the now defunct JBAA women's team. Krista Deane claimed the first tryof the match, which was ever so important for those who invested in the annual women's player auction. Fittingly, the Front Row Club took the prize, which made for around 25 very large happy men on the sidelines. Valkyries head coach Bill Meechan has the girls playing some great rugby this season and with the added player depth, Velox will be looking to reclaim its BC championship. Beavers A new look Beavers team took the paddock to face a big Meralomas squad. Although falling 20-6 to the visitors, Velox showed some real potential during the game, with a lot of developing players having top games. A few open field missed tackles and a couple of mental lapses ultimately cost Velox the game. Two scavenging flankers in the form of L
