Over 200 BC Players in Action this Weekend BCRU Press Release posted Aug 13 2010 With 165 provincial team members in Calgary and another 29 in California it is officially “game on” for the British Columbia Rugby Union’s Age Grade Provincial teams [+22 Senior Players in Calgary]. The BC Under 19 Women, Under 18 Men, Under 16 Men (Gold) and Under 16 Men (Blue) all kick-off today at the Calgary Rugby Park for the 2010 National Championship Festival. Each team travels with 25 athletes and a volunteer management team of 4. With a variety of teams in each age grade division, fans are encouraged to follow the National Festival website for scores, schedules, rosters and all other information. Click here for website. The Under 17 Women have arrived in California where they are partaking in an intensive training camp and series of fixtures against top sides from the US West. With too few provincial teams to have a U17 division at the National Festival this year, Coach Brad Baker has put together what will be an elite rugby experience for this important age category. Look for a tour summary from the management team when they touch back down in Vancouver on August 18. Also returning home on August 18 will be the 49 individuals who make up the two BC Under 14 teams (BC Roar & BC Growl) who are competing in Calgary against Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Each of the BC teams will play five games over three days with a day-off to visit Drumheller. On Saturday night (Aug 14) at Calgary Rugby Park, all teams in Calgary will be on hand to watch the BC Bears take on the Prairie Wolf Pack (click here for story). Click here (noting the tabs on the spreadsheet as well) to view the athletes and management for the 2010 BC Rugby Provincial Age Grade programs. To execute the specific provincial teams mentioned above, it takes a massive effort by 33 dedicated volunteers who serve as provincial team coaches, managers and therapists. The British Columbia Rugby Union would like to thank these individuals for their time, effort and for proving the experience of a life-time for our young athletes.
BCRU League Restructure Fails: Schedule Committee's Recommendation Not Adopted: IMPORTANT UPDATE - RESOLUTION LIKELY TO BE TABLED AGAIN AT SUMMER AGM Feb 3 2010 [ed. comments below] After the original article below I received three emails clarifying the situation, I'll summarize. 1. Even though this resolution failed, it was an extraordinary meeting and therefore required 75% approval. 2. At the AGM to be held this summer this resolution will LIKELY be tabled again and at that time will only require greater than 50% approval. 3. Therefore it is LIKELY that this resolution WILL PASS this summer and the 2011 Premier season will be limited to 9 teams. Stay tuned for further developments. 4. Also the letters indicated that besides the issue of carded players, other important issues were the import rule and enforcement of such rule and player transfers. Original Article The BCRU league restructure failed to garner the 75% majority and therefore was defeated. The vote apparently was 74.6% for and 25.4% against. Sources indicate that all the Island clubs voted in favour of the motion as did the Fraser Valley. The clubs voting against were the Meralomas, Ravens, UBC, Bayside, Rowers and Burnaby. It was said in discussion by those opposed that the biggest issue is the carded athletes and their positioning on only 4 clubs on the Island and the difference they make when playing on so few teams. I've heard there is a recommendation being circulated amongst the clubs that Rugby Canada be approached to enter the carded players as a separate team next year which may alleviate the concerns of the mainland teams if adopted. But for 2011 there appears no move to relegate three teams therefore the Premier will remain with 12 teams. Our readers in the poll were clearly in favour of the restructuring by a margin of 51.9% for and 23.6% against with 24.5% undecided. We'll post any comments and updates as they become available.

The Butchart Gardens BC Senior Women’s Academy to host National Coaches BCRU Press Release posted Dec 3 2008 With the Butchart Gardens Women’s Regional Academy sessions completed for the fall, BC Rugby will be hosting two Senior Academy Camps in December and January for approximately 30 invited players. The Camp on December 8th will be held at UBC while the Camp in January (date to be confirmed) will be held at the new Pacific Sport Institute facility in Victoria. On both occasions, BC Rugby has secured the services of National Senior Women’s Coaches John Long and Kris de Scossa to come in and work with BC Head Coach Steve Bennett in presenting material to the players. Academy Manager Dave Brown views this type of program as being key to providing higher level opportunities for the players: “This is a great opportunity for our senior players who have not been exposed to national team coaches to learn what is happening at the next level and it will also provide our younger targeted athletes the opportunity to work directly with our senior players and learn from working with the likes of National Team players such as Marlene Donaldson, Maria Gallo, Anna Schnell, Kim Donaldson and Lesley MacKenzie. It also provides John and Kris with the opportunity to meet with the current National Team players and monitor their performance.” Brown also notes that the fact that the Academy is completely at no cost to the players makes it an attractive program both at the developmental and more elite levels. “At the Regional level we have been able to involve our National players in presenting content and then have them and camp staff evaluate the players and provide written feedback on their performance. It has been a great exercise in providing coaching experience for our emerging female coaches as well as in setting up role models for our younger players.” The BC Provincial Women’s Academy program is generously supported by contributions from the Butchart Gardens.

2008 BCRU AGM - Day 1 Highlights posted June 15 2008 Saturday Business meeting. There were reps from the following clubs and sub Unions: Meralomas, Capilanos, Richmond, Fraser Valley Rugby Union, Velox, James Bay, UBC, Rowers, Port Alberni, CW, Cowichan, North Vancouver Island Rugby Union, Vancouver Island Referees, Bayside, Burnaby, Vancouver Island Rugby Union. -Carded team in Victoria will not happen this year. (This came from RC) I think someone jumped the gun here. -Vote of expanding the rule allowing the Premier League to expand to 12 teams. -3 positions available for BCRU Directorship. Only 3 nominees on the card, all from the Island, Marlene Donaldson (Velox), Dan Cvitanovich (Cowichan) and Tony Watson (Velox). Apparently the "nominees" from the mainland were asked to pull their names?? This will bring the number of BCRU Directors from the VIRU up to 3 from 1. -Appeal process to be restructured to make the process less cumbersome. Vote today. -Seeding process to be eliminated. Where some fall leagues are given automatic seeds into the Spring BC Wide Playoffs is seen to be unfair to the other fall leagues who do not get automatic seeds into the playoffs. Vote today. -Interesting the VRU president, Tanya Donaldson, was not at this meeting but was at Brockton Oval watching the games. There was some grumbling over this from some clubs. [ed. addendum from Tanya Donaldson] Just as a point of clarification regarding the Saturday business session of the BCRU AGM. I was actually putting up post pads and dealing with many other game day logistics with 3 fixtures at Brockton on the Saturday. I had informed the BCRU of the games when they set the date and requested that the business session not be scheduled then, given a full day of rugby at Brockton and
