CDI Premier Division-Week 2: Bayside Sharks 17 at UBC Old Boy Ravens 19

by Chris Veslemes
posted Feb 16 2010

The Bayside Sharks headed out to Jericho Beach Park for a matchup with the UBC Old Boy Ravens. Bayside looking to rebound after a tough loss versus UVIC the week before, looking to shore up their defence that had allowed 53 points to the students. The Ravens were looking for their first win of the season after opening their 2010 campaign with a loss to James Bay.

Bayside opened the game pressuring the Ravens, after some good work by Bayside they earned a 5 meter scrum, the ball was released from the scrum out to the Shark backs, the ball ending up in center Matt Miles hands, who broke the gain line but couldn’t quite make it across the line, but a quick cycle to the oncoming forwards, and prop Taylor Stogryn, who pushed his way over the line to score between the posts, Eric Sugawara hit the easy conversion, 7-0 for Bayside just 12 minutes in.

20th minute, Ravens opened their scoring with a Penalty through their scrumhalf, Ed Fairhurst, 7-3 for Bayside.

25th minute, Bayside matched the Ravens earlier Penalty, with one of their own through Sugawara, 10-3 for Bayside.

In the 32nd minute, Bayside used their territorial advantage in the first half and turned it into points, off a 22 meter dropout by the Ravens, it landed in the hands Bayside #8 Pat Bickerton, who took the ball up, after he was tackled, the ball was moved out to the backs, center Matt Miles made a nice pass to hooker Levi Hansen who was hanging out in the centers, he found a gap in the defence, and took it toward the Ravens line, then as the last defender for the Ravens came to tackle Hansen, he off loaded to Miles, who sprinted the last 10 meters to score between the posts, Sugawara conversion 17-3 for Bayside.

Halftime score 17-3 for Bayside. Bayside had all the possession and had the score to show for it at halftime, looking like they were on their way to a win, but the Ravens had something to say about it.

5 minutes into the second half, the Ravens cut into the Sharks lead, with a penalty from Fairhurst, 17-6 for Bayside.

A minute later, a turning point in the game, Bayside Flanker Cass Conkin was shown a yellow card for repeated infringements at the breakdown.

54th minute, after the Ravens pushed deep into the Bayside 22 meter, close to the goal line, and were awarded a 5 meter scrum. Bayside scrum, down a man, was out muscled across the line by the Raven scrum to score a pushover try, Fairhurst converted, 17-13 for Bayside.

The Ravens continued to be camped in the Bayside end, even after Conkin had returned from his 10 minutes in the sin bin, he could not subside the wave of Raven forwards, as they kept on driving 1 meter at a time, keeping possession of the ball, forcing the Sharks to infringe.

69th minute, after another one of those infringements, the Sharks were penalized within the range of Fairhurst, who cooly slotted another penalty, 17-16 for Bayside.

Bayside now was just holding on barely to their lead by one point now, a lead that was a total of 14 points now was down to one. Bayside had their chance to get out of their end, a couple times but unfortunately dropped balls, and poor choices kept them hemmed into their end.

With 2 minutes left in the game, the inevitable happened for Bayside, one of the Sharks was judged to have tripped one of the Ravens, after yellow cards were shown to a player from each side after get together of both teams after the trip. Fairhurst stepped up and slotted the penalty, to give the Ravens a 2 point lead 19-17.

With only two minutes left, Bayside tried to get into the Ravens half, and they did, set themselves up for the Drop goal to win, but the ball was bobbled, and there was not even an attempt.

The full time whistle went, and Bayside had blown a 14 point lead, and the Ravens had a great comeback. The game truly was a story of 2 halves, the first half was all Bayside Sharks, and second half was all Ravens. Bayside walks away from that game with a Bonus point, and sit at 0-2 after 2 weeks, time to get going and start getting some wins, next weekend they host Burnaby Lake.

Bayside Win U17 BC Title

from Castaway Wanderers website (cw.rugby-portal.com/rfw/)
[ed. forwarded by Adam Roberts with attached note: "Hats off to the CW club... They ran a total professional outfit and were fantastic hosts!!]
posted December 15 2009

A slight skiff of snow settled on the capital but it was 'game on' last Sunday at Windsor when a very strong and well coached Bayside team visited to test the local Ed Bryans Cup winners. Bayside supporters had also made the trek en masse, and they are to be congratulated on the "total package" on the day.

The game was only two minutes old when CW was penalized in front and Murphy-Blake posted first points. At the twenty minute mark, Fergus Hall replied for the hosts as the battle waged back and forth. Following a booming punt downfield and a favorable bounce, CW applied pressure which resulted in a penalty. The alert Captain, Joe Furness, took a quick tap and slipped the pass to a following Fergus Hall who was able to force his way over. Despite what looked like a Bayside backline that had lethal potential, CW appeared to have the lead at the interval but it was not to be and in fact, the lead was never to be regained. Right on half time, #10, Murphy-Blake glided through after a deft dummy and a missed tackle to score and convert for a 10 - 8 heart-breakng lead.

The second stnza opened with a ton of Bayside possession and they really put CW to the sword. It was ten minutes in when the huge and speedy winger, Williams, scooted away from tacklers, to score under the posts. Down 17 - 8 and the task of tackling bigger, stronger and faster men, again CW found themselves defending desperately, particularly against the very talented Bayside backs. It was from one such foray that Gerhardt filled and made good yards. From the ensuing breakdown, the ball passed through six sets of hands, side to side and Locker crossed the line untouched. The convert put the contest out of reach.

To CW's credit, they did not abandon the fray, forcing a lineout deep in Bayside's 22. Munro took the ball and drove blind, handing off to Kinsella who had much work to do but finished with a forceful burst and well-deserved try. Both these lads were work-horses all day long for the losing side. Hall added the extras and at 24 - 15, things looked respectable. This was not to be the final scoreline and Murphy-Blake was once again the thorn in the side with a "slinky" weaving run and a missed tackle to cross for his brace. With CW "emptying the bench" in the late going, Bayside added another for a 34 - 15 victory.

Spectators were unanimously agreeable on the quality of the rugby on display, Bayside unselfishly moving the ball at pace with all players looking to free someone for the line. If all clubs were to work on junior rugby and games of this calibre were to become regular occurences, the state of Canadian rugby would soon be revived. Kudos to the victors and the Adam Roberts coached, Earl Marriot school teams should have high school coaches, sitting up and being aware, with the upcoming schools season.

Bayside 7s Tournament Results

by Mike Pajic
posted August 26 2009

The Bayside 7s tournament this past weekend was a huge success. 24 men's, women's, juniors and over 40s teams found there way to South Surrey Athletic Park on a sun filled day that showcased great athletes and skills.

The over 40s division playing 10s had a strong contigent of teams with the SOB`s of Surrey taking the Best on Pitch award.

The junior division was hotly contested and showed that the Canada 7s Olympic selectors of the future might have some tough decisions. Surrey and Abbotsford were finalists on the day with the Surrey Beavers taking the win 29-12.

The womens division championship match was played between Bayside and Burnaby, with Burnaby taking the prize 15-0.

In the mens divisions the decision was made to do away with the "Premier" & "Social" designation and create a "Hong Kong 7s" type of draw. With this in mind 3 pools of mens teams were created playing a series of round robin games. The winners of the pools and one wild card winner was selected to play in the Cup matches, second in the pool in the Plate and the Bowl was contested by the highest next seeds. The results were fantastic. All of the teams appreciated playing each other and made for a great games in the finals of each division.

The Bowl final was played between United and Bayside Islanders with the Islanders taking the bowl win.

The Plate semi finals were very exciting with the game between Chuckanut and Brit Lions going into sudden death overtime. Chuckanut won the game in the first few minutes of overtime. 34-29 being the final score.

In the other Plate semi the Ocean Park Eazy Breezers (Bayside) took another opportunity to show off the great uniforms they donned against BC U18 a few weeks ago and play the Surrey Beavers. Surrey was confident they could beat the young kids from White Rock but in the end the Breezers won 35-10. This set up what was a great plate final. Chuckanut took the hardware home to their annual Luau with a 22-21 win.

The cup semi finals were set with Bayside vs Abbotsford and OPSB and Valley High (JBAA). In the first semi, Abby came out storming with the first try of the match. But from there Bayside took over. With some strong play and guidance with 7s veteran Nick Milau, the young Bayside group started to run away with the match 45-7. Valley High needed a last minute try to take the victory over the speedsters from OPSB. The Valley High boys with the leadership of Phil Mack and Dan Harlow didn't worry when they were a few points down with not much time to go. They set up a beautiful try for right under the posts on the final whistle. Score 22-21

With the Bayside vs Valley High (this is a "Saved By the Bell" reference) rematch of last year's final set up, and no Zach or Screech, it was left to Mack and Harlow for the Valley High Boys vs Milau and Henderson for Bayside.

The game was back and forth tied at half 7-7. The second half saw Valley High 5 meteres away from a score but an errant pass meant they came away with nothing. Bayside scored 2 tries in the final frame to come way with the 17-7 victory.

A big thanks to all of the teams, volunteers and referees for coming out and making this another succesful Bayside 7s.

BAYSIDE YOUNG SHARKS: Under 24 Academy Team in Fall Spray League

posted Aug 21 2009
from David Benoit

Bayside Sharks would like to introduce our entry into the VRU Fall Spray league competition. Bayside will be fielding two teams with the 1st division team being “Bayside Young Sharks”.

“The Bayside Young Sharks” will be an under 24 “Academy Team”. The VRU Spray league will offer an excellent opportunity for our under 24 players to develop and test themselves much in the same way university sides have done over the years. The 2nd division team will be a traditional entry allowing for our club players to get some fall playing time as well.

The coaching staff will be led by Brendan Singbeil, Brian Hutchinson, Tom Wilson and managed by Dave Downing all have been involved with rugby in the south surrey area for a period of time and have worked with Bayside’s age grade programs.

"Seeing this team finally come to fruition is an exciting time for our guys and for our club as a whole. Development of young talent within the local area has always been a mandate for us here at Bayside and is evident by our successful junior programs in past years.

A continual production of young home-grown talent has always been an issue for rugby within Canada, especially with the collapse of the Pacific Pride and Young Canada years ago. We wanted to take the first step to successfully re-bridge that gap between age-grade and senior mens rugby in the province.

With our group of guys we are confident that we will be able to put a competitive team together week after week, playing an exciting brand of rugby that both the players and spectators will enjoy." (Coach Brian Hutchinson)

Bayside has a strong tradition of its players playing for Canada 15's and 7's, this introduction of the "Young Sharks" is another tool to help our athletes compete at a higher level. In the spring Bayside’s Premier team will return to the pitch in the BCRU CDI league.

Sharks Sweep Rowers in Weekend Action

by Chris Veslemes
posted March 11 2009

CDI Premier Division

Bayside Sharks 16 at Vancouver Rowing Club 6

Week 7 of the CDI Premier League had the Bayside Sharks once again on the road for their 5th road game out of 7 total games, quite the tough schedule. Bayside headed out to historic Brockton Oval in Stanley Park to play the Vancouver Rowing Club. Bayside needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Rowers already out of the running, were just out to play spoilers.

Bayside opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a penalty through flyhalf Eric Sugawara, 3-0 for Bayside. Ten minutes later, Rowers tied up the game with a penalty of their own, 3-3.

The game settled down after this point with both teams taking turns on attack, Rowers had a stretch where they were camped in the Bayside 22 meter, but came away with nothing after some aggressive defense from Bayside turned them away.

In the 28th minute, with the ball deep in the Rowers end, after Bayside had hemmed them in with a great kick, the Rowers scrambled back and were getting ready to clear their lines but Bayside center Murray Brookes was shown a yellow card for killing the ball, a team penalty after being warned just a little bit earlier, so the Rowers got out of jail, and up a man.

With Bayside playing down a man they went on the attack in the 32nd minute, Bayside turned over the ball from the Rowers at midfield, they quickly moved it to the left side, where there was an overlap, flanker Jason Blaak did a great job of taking advantage of the overlap, committing the last defender and then releasing winger Zach Thorpe with a great pass, Thorpe took the ball at pace, shook off the attempted tackled of the Rowers fullback, and sprinted away to score in the corner, the conversion was missed, 8-3 for Bayside.

In the 40th minute, Rowers shrunk the Bayside lead with a penalty, 8-6 for Bayside.

Halftime score 8-6 for Bayside

Nine minutes into the second half Bayside again extended their lead with a penalty through Sugawara, 11-6 for Bayside.

In the 60th minute, Bayside again attacks off of a turnover, kicking down to the corner and pursuing, turning the ball over and getting into the hands of inside center Adam Roberts, who crossed the line, the conversion was missed by Sugawara, 16-6 for Bayside.

With seven minutes left in the game, Bayside front rower, Dan Leigh broke his leg while taking a trail ball, the game was delayed for over 30 minutes while the training staff from both teams attended to Dan, and both teams tried to stay warm as they waited for the ambulance.

When the game resumed at the Bayside 22 meter, Bayside started out attacking, working their way down field just outside the Rowers 22 meter, but they turned over the ball again. Rowers went on attack, while on attack in the 75th minute, Bayside scrumhalf Brian Hutchison was shown a yellow for what the referee judged as a late hit, which no one saw.

In the final minute of the game, Bayside Flanker Cass Conkin was shown a yellow card for slowing down the game.

Final score 16-6 for Bayside.

This was definitely not an oil painting, it was not the greatest rugby spectacle, turnovers a plenty, breakdowns were just a mess, handling errors, but Bayside came out with the win, scoring 2 good tries off of Rower turnovers, Bayside also defended very well, keeping the Rowers from scoring any tries.

As a side note, Bayside would like to extend a big thank you the Vancouver Rowing Club training staff for all the help they gave while Dan was injured and while he waited for the Paramedics to arrive.

Sharks on Feeding Frenzy at South Surrey Athletic Park: Bayside 39 - JBAA 11

CDI Premier Division: James Bay 11 @ Bayside Sharks 39

Week 5 of the CDI Premier League had the Bayside Sharks return to the friendly confines of South Surrey Athletic Park, after being on the road for 3 of the first 4 weeks, but Bayside’s task was not easy with the defending Rousefell Cup Champions, James Bay. Both teams where coming off large bonus point victories the week before and both teams trying to get themselves into the top six that would qualify them for playoffs.

The game started off quickly again for Bayside, as they worked the ball deep into the James Bay end, and after a few phases through the forwards, the ball was released to winger Brodie Henderson, who broke a couple tackles and made it across the goal line to score, the conversion was missed by Kirk Wyss, but after only 5 minutes, Bayside was up 5-0.

In the 10th minute James Bay got on the board with a penalty straight in front of the posts after some good pressure forced Bayside to take a penalty. 5-3 for Bayside

In the 13th minute, Bayside responded with a penalty of their own through Wyss, 8-3 for Bayside.

With the game at 8-3 both Bayside and James Bay took their turns attacking but the defense was good from both teams.

In the 27th minute, off a missed touch from James Bay, Bayside fullback Murray Brookes, took the ball on a run, breaking a couple tackles before moving the ball to number 8 Bruce Railde who found a gap in the defense and out sprinted the defenders to score between the posts, Wyss converted, 15-3 for Bayside.

In the 38th minute, James Bay closed the deficit, with a penalty, 15-6 for Bayside.

Halftime score 15-6 for Bayside.

Only 3 minutes into the half Bruce Railde added his second try of the game, after pressure off a scrum deep in the James Bay end, Wyss converted, 22-6 for Bayside.

At the 48th minute, Bayside kept on coming with a try through winger Isimeli Sigarua, the conversion was missed, 27-6 for Bayside.

In the 57th minute, Bayside prop Dan Leigh was shown a yellow card and sent to the bin for 10 minutes.

Just 3 minutes into Bayside playing a man down, they struck again, with Center Chris Pack finding a gap in the James Bay defense, he swerved his way around their fullback to score between the posts, Eric Sugawara converted, 34-6 for Bayside.

In the 65th minute, while still playing with only 14 men, Bayside once again breached the James Bay defense, with a strong run by one of the backs, off loading to the ever present flanker, Jason Blaak, to sprint in and score, the conversion was missed by Sugawara, 39-6 for Bayside.

James Bay finally crossed the line with a try in the 33rd minute, with a try through their scrumhalf, the conversion was missed, 39-11 for Bayside.

Final Score 39-11.

Bayside strung together there best 80 minutes this season, defending well, and then when going on attack they were decisive, scoring some beautiful tries. Obviously in a win of this sort there are few that played poorly, but the standouts in the game were the backrow of Bayside. Adam Van Stavern, Jason Blaak and Bruce Railde controlled the game at the break down, turning over James Bay ball at an alarming rate.

Now Bayside heads once again out on the road for a game against Capilanos, who sit at the top of the standings, another big test.

Bayside Sharks Marched to Jericho for Battle with Ravens: Secure 27-15 Prem Win

Bayside Sharks 27 at UBCOB Ravens 15

Week 4 of the CDI Premier League had the Bayside Sharks heading out to Jericho to play the UBC Old Boy Ravens, in what was a home game for the Sharks on the schedule, but due to a trade of home dates in the first half of the season, Bayside was again travelling, for the 3rd time in the first 4 weeks, at least this time no ferry was involved. Bayside was again greeted with a less than ideal field, with large mud patches through out the field, the joy of playing rugby in February.

It didn’t take long for the game to get going, off the opening kickoff UBCOB were deep in their own end, and attempted to clear the ball into touch, but the ball went off the side of the boot of the Ravens kicker, and sliced in field, into the waiting hands of Bayside center, Isimeli Sigarua, who zig zagged his way barely touched from 30 meters out to score in the corner, the conversion was missed by Kirk Wyss, and it was 5-0 for Bayside after only 1 minute.

Just 7 minutes into the game, Bayside Captain Adam Van Stavern was shown a yellow card as the touch judge had seen him throw a punch. So now Bayside had to defend their lead with only 14 men for 10 minutes.

In the 15th minute, the Ravens used the extra man to their advantage, after pressure deep into the Bayside 22, the Ravens punched it over from close in to score, and they converted the kick to take the lead, 7-5 for the Ravens.

Three minutes later, as the Ravens were back on the attack at about the halfway line, as they had a bit of an overlap and they were moving the ball wide out to their winger, but Eric Sugawara, the Bayside winger cleverly stepped in front of the pass, and picked it off, and was off, sprinting to the line, but as he felt like he wasn’t going to make it, he saw Sigarua supporting behind him, so he executed a beautiful wrap around pass to Sigarua, who broke one tackle and then used his power and pace to out sprint the rest of the defenders to the goal line for his second try of the game. Wyss converted from right in front of the posts, for the lead to go back to Bayside, 12-7.

In the 20th minute, the Ravens closed the gap with a penalty, 12-10 for Bayside.

In the 26th minute Bayside had a chance to extend their lead with a penalty, but the kick was pushed wide, keeping the score 12-10 for Bayside.

The rest of the half was a battle between the two team’s 22 meter lines, with each taking a turn on offense and defense, but no points were scored.

Halftime score 12-10 for Bayside.

Six minutes into the second half, one of the Ravens player was caught doing some foul play, and was sent to the bin for 10 minutes.

In the 48th minute, Bayside would score the only points with the man advantage, through a penalty from Wyss, 15-10 for Bayside.

In the 68th minute, Bayside fullback Murray Brookes made a line break on a counter attack, running over a defender to get into the open field, he was supported by ever present Isimeli Sigarua, who took the pass from Brookes, took on the defender, then moved the ball back to Brookes who was left to sprint 25 meters in to score under the posts, Wyss converted, 22-10 for Bayside.

Bayside added to their lead in the 71st minute, when a kick was handled by Sigarua, who again showed his strength catching the kick as he was getting hit, keeping his balance, taking a few strides and then releasing fullback Brookes again, for his second run away try of the day for the bonus point, sprinting in this time from 30 meters, the conversion was missed from the side, 27-10 for Bayside.

In the 77th minute, the Ravens hit back with a beautifully worked try, with the off load working to perfection going through 7 or 8 sets of hands, many of them offloaded in the tackle, to score, the conversion was missed, 27-15 for Bayside.

Final Score 27-15 for Bayside.

A positive that came from this game was the control of the game by young referee Kyle Ferguson, who, only in his 4th premier game, controlled a game between 2 teams that do not like each other, and had their game in the first half of the season abandoned due to an ugly brawl. For Mr. Ferguson this was not an easy game as he was refereeing his former club Bayside for the first time, but he did a great job making sure nothing got out of control always with a fair, level head, and on top of that managed a good game, with the game having good flow. It is great to see some new blood in the referee fraternity, he indeed has a great future.
