Thing are moving slowly as a major upgrade continues at John Oliver Park

From the Delta Optimist
Article by: Sandor Gyarmati
Posted: Dec 8, 2004

Four years ago, Delta reached a deal with the Ex-Britannia/ Red Lions Athletic Association for the club to invest almost $2 million in the East Delta park.

The club was to build new rugby fields that the public would get to use 50 per cent of the time.

The club was also to renovate the dilapidated barn, turning it into a facility with community meeting rooms and locker space. The park is named after colourful former B.C. premier John Oliver, who once farmed the land.

But the renovations have only inched along, with just one of the three new fields completed. Work is now underway on the second field and the foundation for a completely new barn is expected to get started before the end of this year.

"A lot of their (Brit/Lions) project has been derived from fundraised or donation activities and as donations come they can schedule their work opportunities around that," said municipal parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz.

The original barn had to be dismantled because it turned out that its building technique made it too difficult to remodel, said Kuntz

"It was old and certainly special, but it wasn't structurally capable of being suitable as a public occupancy building," he explained. "So what the Brit/Lions did was hire an architect to recreate the building using the original arched beams, but they will be put up underneath a real beam that's going to be invisible but behind it," he said.

"So as you walk in the barn it will look and feel like the original barn but, in fact, it will be a brand new structure in the same shape and form. It will very much look like the old barn, except it won't have a sag in the middle."

Donald Luxton, a consultant who specializes in heritage structures, has been hired as an advisor for the barn component of the project.
