"Running away from the field"
Carson girls claim third straight AAA provincial rugby title

North Shore News www.nsnews.com

A North Vancouver team just can't seem to shake that winning feeling.

The No. 1-ranked Carson Graham Eagles AAA girls rugby team won their third B.C. championships in a row May 24, the fourth time in five years they've received the title.

Facing No. 2-ranked Semiahmoo secondary in the final, the girls took a-no-holds-barred approach, their sights set on the prize.

"We came out with all guns blazing and dominated right from the start and physically beat them up," said Brad Baker, co-coach. He's joined by Rick Pimlott on the field.

"Stags no match for universal soldiers"
Close at half but Carson Graham clinches Triple A title 37-11

Howard Tsumura, The Province

Battle plans are always best executed by universal soldiers.

On Saturday, as the second half of the B.C. high school boys Triple A rugby championship unfolded at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium, the Carson Graham Eagles were busy showing they were up to the task of winning in any way the opposition wanted to play them.

"We have the physical stuff, the open field stuff and the high-paced stuff," said Eagles head coach Tom Larisch after his team won its second B.C. crown in three seasons with a 37-11 triumph over Vancouver Island's Shawnigan Lake Stags.

Super Saturday: In Pursuit of the Derek Hyde-Lay Shield, Carson Graham Defeated Island champion SMUS 38-15

posted May 11 2008

The 8th Annual "Super Saturday", a gala day involving the top high school rugby sides in BC, played out May 10 at Shawnigan and Brentwood.

The day pitted Island teams against their Mainland counterparts, with matchups determined by Premier league play over the previous two months.

In the 1st XV competition, in pursuit of the Derek Hyde-Lay Shield, Carson Graham made light of a much anticipated #1 vs #2 encounter with Island champion SMUS, running up an early 11-0 lead en route to a comprehensive 38-15 win. While the Victoria Independent did claw back to 19-10 at half time, two early second half scores by the Eagles removed any drama for a crowd approaching 800.

In other games, AAA pre season favourite Shawnigan gave notice of intent with a commanding 34-5 victory over a talented Semiahmoo side, while St. Georges surprised some with a 27-20 comeback win over Oak Bay. In the final AAA matchup, a fully healthy GP Vanier team flexed its muscles en route to a 52-7 triumph over Earl Marriott.

In other action, Brentwood showed outstanding form to pummel perennial AA powerhouse Rockridge 61-0. The Mill Bay outfit was dominant in all phases of play, and must be on track to win the provincial AA title in three weeks time.

Carson Graham showed the depth of its program by also winning the 2nd XV Premier competition, this time with a comfortable 32-10 victory over Shawnigan.

Other games on the day saw Esquimalt qualify for the BC AA Tournament by defeating Vic High 10-0, while, in exhibition action, Canada U20, thanks to a late score from flanker Keegan Selby, edged out a highly enterprising DHL XV 25-19.

The two top high school rugby teams in Victoria, SMUS and Oak Bay, continue their battle for local supremacy this Saturday

posted May 2 2008

The two top high school rugby teams in Victoria, SMUS and Oak Bay, continue their battle for local supremacy this Saturday, May 3 as part of the SMUS Alumni Day celebrations.

Kickoff is 3:30pm.

While SMUS defeated Oak Bay two months ago in the Boot Game, the provincially 5th ranked Barbarians have improved significantly in the interim, led by Canada U17 #8 Shea Wakefield and powerful flanker Sam Lawless. In the backfield, captain Connor Braid will direct operations from the crucial flyhalf position, while starry centre Dylan Jones, now back in full health after microfracture surgery to his knee, is proving a handful for all defences.

SMUS, still ranked #1 in the province after a recent 26-22 victory over Shawnigan, has been well served by an outstanding captain and #8 in Andrew Crow, who, along with converted flyhalf Sam Skulsky, has been prominent in every game. Likewise, Canada U17 lock John Humphries has performed splendidly while Beau Parker, who scored four tries against France at the recent Millfield Festival in England, hopes to shake off a nagging hamstring strain.

Flanker Benson Ling and centre Mike vander Westhuizen are two others whose play has been impressive all season.

Summary of HS 7s Rugby tournament at St. Georges, won by West Van

by Peter MacDonald
posted April 14 2008

Another great weekend of 7s rugby just wrapped up as St. Georges hosted the BC Invitational High School 7s tourney. The BCSSRU handicappers had a problem with their crystal ball but everything else went well including great weather, excellent refereeing and fun, wide open competitive games. After Saturday’s play St Georges (1st) and Magee (2nd) emerged from Pool A, Kelowna Christian (1) and Williams Lake (2) from Pool C, West Van (1) and Oak Bay (2) from Pool D and Earl Marriott (1) and Prince of Wales (2) from Pool B.

Team highlights on the day were Williams Lake making a strong showing beating Kelowna and Claremont to get into the top 8, West Van smoking an error prone Oak Bay in the last game of the day and St. Georges cruising to three victories. Individuals who impressed (I could only watch one game at a time) were West Van’s Franklin #9, Walden,#10 and #14 a quick winger, St. Georges’ Tim Stockton and Ross Yellowlees and Magee’s Amrit Brar whose speed and change of direction left many defenders in the dust.

Sunday’s 10:10 and 10:30am crossover games (A1 vs D2, A2 vs D1, B1 vs C2 and B2 vs C1) would decide which four teams would continue to vie for the Cup. Shaking off the stiffness and fatigue from Saturday’s efforts the boys headed out to settle matters. Oak Bay’s boys were let out of the doghouse by Murray Allen and Gary Johnston and laid a bit of a kicking on Saints choosing to get aggressive and physical on defence. West Van eventually overcame Magee in a good game, Marriott took W. Lake and PW beat Kelowna Christian. In the semis Oak Bay carried on its resurrection with a win over Marriott and West Van rolled to a fifth straight win this time over PW.

The final was to be a repeat of the Pool D game between West Van and Oak Bay. It was a tough battle throughout with tries for both teams and plenty of speed and power on both sides. West Van prevailed in a close one and came through as deserving winners going undefeated all the way. Earl Marriott took the bronze over PW and Magee turned the tables on St. Georges, with Graeme Minty outlegging a few defenders to score three tries, to take 5th and the Plate. Williams Lake and Kelowna Christian weren’t offered a 7/8 game which also would have been a second go round for them as were all of the last four games in the top 8 group.

West Van’s 13, Malloon, 6 and 15 had strong outings on Sunday and the winners were solid all over the pitch choosing to tackle and pursue aggressively in defence rather than sit back and slide only. Look for West Van to be strong in the 15s this year. Robert Bateman took 9th and won the Bowl and S. Kamloops, Alpha, Fleetwood Park, Q. Elizabeth, Claremont, Kelowna and Dover Bay, in no particular order, rounded out the field.

Thanks to St Georges and the BCSSRU for two great days, see you next year.

Fraser Valley Final AA: Bateman 29 - Brookswood 17

posted May 27 2005
submitted Doug Primrose

Robert Bateman from Abbotsford hosted Langley's Brookswood in a hard
hitting Fraser Valley Final Wednesday in 28 C heat. The intensity of the
match was seen immediatley when Bateman number 8 Matt Ireland took the
opening kickoff at full pace and smashed through Brookswood defenders
before being stopped at their 22m line. The play went back and forth and
then Brookswood got a bounce when Bateman had a miscommunication on a kick
and the Brookswood player took the ball into the end zone.

Bateman came storming back with good forward play, recycling good ball for
the backs, but the backs had the jitters one may expect in a championship
match and the ball was knocked on a couple of times. Finally things
settled down for them when center Dordy freeman stole a Brookswood ball
and the forwards crashed through a couple of times with trailer balls.
Then flyhalf moved the ball to Dordy Freeman who scored in the corner to
make the game 5-5. Bateman continued pressure and were awarded a penalty
which fullback Nick Thiesen hit. The remainder of the first half Bateman
dominated, scoring another try to make the score at the half 15-5.

The opening of the first half Bateman got a break when their opening
restart did not travel 10m, but the Brookswood played it and lost
possession. Flyhalf Mark Adams settled into the game and began picking
apart the Brookswood defense, finding gaps and offloading to runners at
pace. He also kicked the ball down field when in trouble. He was rewarded
with two 60m trys of his own after breaking through big holes in the three
line. Brookswood battled back, but were unable to get close enough to
threaten and the final score was Bateman 29 Brookswood 17. It was a very
hard hitting, spirited game by both sides. Both teams now head to the
Provincial tournament next week.

Cross-town rivalry continues in high school rugby SMUS Falls to Oak Bay

posted May 25 2005
By Patrick Blennerhassett - Saanich News

Despite the occasional lapses in familiarity, everything seemed to go according to plan in this year's BC AAA High School Rugby season.

Oak Bay High took the Howard Russell Cup at home in convincing fashion, dumping long-time rivals St. Michael's University School 24-5 with good-old fashioned hard work and skill.

The Barbarians were clearly the more dominant team, riding the disappointing loss they suffered at SMUS a few weeks back at the private school's homecoming weekend.

"Its great to win at home in front of our fans and after what happened with the SMUS homecoming game," said Oak Bay coach Gary Johnston.

"To win 24-5 is exceptional. I didn't expect that big a point spread," he said. "Definitely this was the rubber match, this was our turn to play."
Counterpart coach with SMUS Ian Hyde-Lay said Oak Bay was the deserving winner after the game.

"We just don't have the raw physical talent to ride mistakes," said Hyde-Lay of his team's performance in the finals. "We should have scored three or four tries at the start. We missed opportunities and we failed to take advantage of any of them."

Both teams spent the better part of the first half feeling each other out until Oak Bay started applying pressure to a die-hard SMUS backline.

By halftime, the Barbs were up 12-0, consistently steamrolling SMUS, keeping them back on their heels the whole game.

The Barbs' had great games from the usual suspects - scrum-half Sean White, No. 8 Bayne Pettinger, fullback Scott Stone and winger Dan Kilpatrick. On the other hand, SMUS was once again the Andrew Cavin show, with the speedy back using his blinding speed and good smarts to keep things exciting.

Cavin added this isn't the best way to go into provincials but said he's fairly happy with the way the season went.

"We managed to make the finals and had a pretty good season and hopefully we'll pick it up again in the BCs," said Cavin. "Our ball handling needs to pick up and just support in general the forwards and the backs, getting over the ball," he added on what his team will work on for provincials.

Over at Oak Bay, Johnston and his team are more than impressed with their season going into provincials, ranked in the top five.

"We had our ups and downs this year," said Johnston, "and we knew that this was not going to be a super strong team but we had guys like Dan Kilpatrick, who we didn't expect to play, come in and he turned into a try-scoring sensation."

Johnston added that aside from the surprise addition of Kilpatrick, it's great to see Grade 12s like Pettinger have a crack at leaving a legacy at Oak Bay High.

Both Pettinger and fellow Canadian Rugby property White hope they can continue the team's winning ways and leave an impression when provincials roll around.

"We're going to train even harder than we have all year," said White. "Hopefully we can go there and turn some heads and win a couple of hard games."

"The team's young so everyone was kind of looking to next year," added Pettinger. "The team next year was supposed to be the team to win the BCs, so we didn't write this year off but we didn't expect to do this well."
